what the hell is wrong with people?! why are they so damn lazy that they feel the need to plagiarize?! this is all directed at the Harvard sophmore that wrote some teen book but ripped off 18 passages from another author. she even had enough balls to copy a 14 word section verbatim. faaaaantastic. her publisher had given her $500,000 for this book

I couldn't agree more with you about that Harvard girl. I was watching her on the Today Show yesterday and she was giving some of the worst excuses. "It must have just been stuck in my mind." Every single paper I turn in at school goes through turnitin.com, if colleges can do that, I think editors can come up with the same thing.
As for James Frey, I don't know anything about My Friend Leonard. I haven't read it or heard much about it. However, I did read his first book and do praise it, even if it is pure fiction. Perhaps the word "memoir" needs to go or be drastically defined. I've read a ton of memoirs and after reading Frey's A Million Little Pieces and hearing the controversy surrounding it, I realized that I didn't believe every single word written in most of the memoirs that my mind has consumed. I praise Frey's first book because I am going to be working as an drug & alcohol addiction counselor in less than 9 months and I believe it can provide addicts some form of hope. And if it helped anyone with an addiction take a stronger fight with against their addiction then it did serve some purpose.
