Any help on a CD drive not reading disks any more?

I've posted this elsewhere, hoping for some response, but so far nothing has helped, so I figured I'd see if anyone here might have some bright ideas...

My tower has a CD-R drive but it's recently gone kaput. In explorer the drive shows up as "DVD/CD-RW Drive" whereas I know that it originally was just "CD Drive" and although it will whirr and the disk-read symbol will appear on the cursor when I insert a disk, the drive just will not read anything. Opening the drive in explorer just shows a blank drive, as it would if there was no disk in it.
Someone told my sister that if you put in a CDRW disk and format the drive, you can use a CD writer as a CD re-writer, and after something she commented shortly before this problem came up, I'm concerned that she's potentially put a DVD-R disk in and tried that out, though she claims no knowledge of anything wrong...
Anyone got any thoughts or ideas on if/how I can restore functionality to my CD drive?
I've tried looking at drivers, but can't seem to find any that will work. The drive is a Matshita CW-8571 and the only drivers I have been able to find for it are for Windows 95/98, and I have XP. I've tried telling Windows to locate a new driver etc via the device manager, only to be told that it cannot find a driver more suitable than the one I currently have.
I've tried the Panasonic website, but can't seem to find drivers on there for this either (Matshita and Panasonic are part of the same company etc).

Any bright sparks have any thoughts?
