Weekends and whatnot
Saturday Zen and I hosted game night at our house. The heat was a little bit of an issue (we only have a window unit and it was 90 degrees out) but compared to outside, it was nice in the house, plus we were just sitting around eating and playing board games so it wasn't like we were running around. I think for next time I want to get one more fan to move the air around a bit (we used to have one more but it broke). We're hosting again in 2 weeks.
Yesterday Zen and I had plans to take our parents to see "A Night of Magic with Dick Van Dyke" at the local theater.
We had to figure out what we were doing about parking because it was our town's annual festival, so the roads were blocked off and parking was extremely limited. Lucky for us, my brother's sister-in-law lives in a condo building right across from the theater and they have a guest spot that she offered us to use. Unfortunately, Zen's parents called around 1 to let us know that his dad was having breathing problems and they had to take him to the ER (he's going through chemo so they have to take anything like that very seriously). Apparently he really wanted to go to the show though, he initially was saying "maybe when we get back from the show I should go to the ER." Zen's mom said "if you need to go to the ER we're going now." As it turned out, it was probably for the best because the show was set to begin at 5pm and the doors opened at 4pm, and when we arrived at 3:45, the line was down the street and around the corner from the theater. We stood out in the sun (in 85 degree weather) for 45 minutes before we finally got into the theater, and that would have been terrible for him (he ended up being admitted to the hospital but he's stable). It was open seating unless you bought the super expensive VIP tickets but most people crowded in to the center, so we got really good seats on the right side with a great view, about 8 rows back. The theater has a Wurlitzer organ, and they had a man playing it while we waited for the show to start. At the beginning of the show, he played a bunch of van dyke's songs from various musicals. Then they had a "speed artist" paint a picture (that turned out to be a pic of Dick Van Dyke). Then Van Dyke and his musical act "The Vantastix" came out and performed a bunch of songs. They took a little break in the middle where his wife came out and interviewed him, then she sang with all of them for a couple of songs. It was fun and he looks (and moves) GREAT especially considering that he's over 90 now. He apparently has a new book out called Keep Moving, and clearly that's been working for him!
