Chapter Six: Unwanted Visitors
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
My phone is sitting on the table and I think if looks could kill, the stupid little device would have exploded or caught on fire by now.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
My fingers keep rapping on the table and I curse under my breath because I now have two calls to field.
One from Dallas and one for Selena.
Great, Demi, just great.
The phone vibrates and I cower in my seat, very happy that there is no one around to see my hiding from a phone.
When the vibrations stop, I pick up the phone thrilled to see that it had only been a text from Taylor and not a phone call from Dallas.
I had decided that I would wait until Dallas called before calling Selena to ask her out tonight.
On second thought, maybe I should call Selena first.
Taking a deep breath, I dial the numbers written on the palm of my hand and push the green button.
The phone rings and just keeps ringing.
I should have known she didn’t want to talk to me.
“Hello?”
The voice on the other line is breathless and I find my own breath caught in my throat.
“Hello?”
“Shit, uh- I mean, sorry Selena, I kind of spaced for a second.”
There’s a pause before the voice speaks up again.
“Who is this?”
“Oh, it’s um…Demi?”
“Hey, Demi! Sorry, I don’t have your number, remember?”
“No, no. It’s okay, don’t worry about it.”
“Alright, so what’s up?”
What’s up? Oh, I didn’t think this through, what do I say?
“Demi, are you there?”
“I’m still here, I just-”
“Spaced again?”
“Yeah, exactly. So Selena, I was wondering…if you’re not doing anything tonight, maybe we could get together?”
I cringe at how lame the request sounds but it’s too late to take it back and I’m just grateful the taller brunette can’t see me wringing my hands in anticipation.
“Tonight?”
“Yeah, is there something wrong with that?”
“No, not really. It’s just…you dropped me off this morning, isn’t there a rule about how long you’re supposed to wait or something?”
Shit. I forgot about that rule.
“Selena, maybe you forgot who you’re talking to. I don’t follow any rules.”
“Right. So tonight?”
I thought we established that already.
“Yes, Selena, tonight.”
“What time?”
I hesitate, not expecting that question.
“I don’t know. Eight, maybe eight thirty?”
“I’ll pick you up at 8:30.”
“Okay, that works wit- wait, you’re picking me up?”
“Yep, see you tonight!”
“But I-”
Click.
Oh my god. I think I just had my reputation’s ass handed to me by that girl.
Bzzzzz…
“Oh, come on. Dallas, you pick now to call?”
Snatching up the phone, I hit the green button, grumbling to myself.
“Hello?”
“Demi?”
“Yes, Dallas. I told you I would answer.”
I hear my older sister pause, “I know but I didn’t really think you would to be honest.”
Sighing softly, I rake a heavy hand through my hair. “Dallas, why couldn’t you just let things be? Was there really any reason to come over this morning?”
“Are you shitting me, Demi? Any reason? How about the fact that you haven’t so much as uttered a word to me in two fucking years? Is that a good enough reason?”
I stand up suddenly, the chair clattering on the kitchen floor. “You cannot be blaming me for our falling out. That’s bullshit and you know it.”
“So why are you still hiding from me?”
Whipping around, I stare open mouthed at Dallas who, for some reason, is standing in my kitchen.
“Dallas, w-what are you doing here?”
The older girl takes a step forward into the kitchen, eyes never leaving mine even for the slightest second. “Did you really think I was going to have this conversation over the phone?”
“I was kind of hoping that, yeah.”
“Demi!”
I throw my hands up in the air, exasperated. “What, Dallas, what? What is it that you want me to say? That I’m happy to see you? Fine, I’m happy to see you. I really am and of course I missed you but you’re insane if you think we can put everything behind us.”
“Why is it so hard to do that? We’re sisters, Demetria!
“Dall-”
The other girl covers my mouth with her hand and lets out a harsh breath, “Stop with my name, okay? At first, I missed hearing you say it but now it’s just getting annoying. It’s Dallas this, Dallas that, Dallas, Dallas, Dallas! Now, I’m going to let you go and we’re going to sit down and discuss this like adults. You’re 20 now and you-”
“Mmmimm tphwenywon.”
“What?”
“Mmmhmm twphinywunnn!”
“What??”
I lick the inside of my sister’s hand and she lets go of my mouth, shrieking.
“I said I’m twenty one!” I scream over her disgusted screeches.
“I don’t care! What the hell did you lick my hand for?”
“You covered my mouth and then asked me what I was saying, dumbass. What else was I supposed to do?”
“Don’t call me a dumbass, you bitch!”
“Fuck off, whore.”
“Shut up, motherfucker.”
“Make me, ho.”
Dallas suddenly breaks out in giggles with me not too far behind and within a few minutes we’re clutching our stomachs in pain.
Composing herself first, I watch as my sister takes a seat on the table and after hesitating slightly, I do the same.
“So, Trace is back.”
The sentence is more of a statement than anything else. I feel my body stiffen at the mention of Trace but nod in Dallas’s direction.
“Miley knew he was going to be at the race last night and I should have known better than to go but-”
“But?! Demi, you went even though you knew he was going to be there?”
“I never back down from a challenge, Dallas. You should know that better than anyone else.”
She opens her mouth, but I hold up a hand to stop her. “Stop. I don’t want to get into this right now.”
“We’re going to have to someday,” Dallas states softly.
“I know. Just not today.”
There’s a heavy silence that falls over us and just when I think it’s going to drive me insane, Dallas pipes up.
“So who’s the girlfriend?”
“Who?”
“Don’t try that with me, Demi. I’m talking about the cute little brunette that was hiding behind the staircase this morning. Seriously, Dem, are all your friends hide-and-seek challenged or something?”
I let out a low chuckle, “I think that’s just Miley. The cute brunette’s name is Selena and she’s not my girlfriend. I don’t do the whole relationship thing.”
“That’s not what I remember…Megan, her name was?”
“That was a mistake.”
“One that lasted nearly a year and a half?”
“Okay, so it was a big mistake! How does Megan have anything to do with Selena?”
“I see the way you look when you talk about Selena, Dem. I remember thinking how your eyes glowed around Megan. Well, they sparkle ten times brighter than that even when someone just mentions Selena’s name.”
“You don’t know anything, Dallas. You haven’t even met her yet!”
“I don’t need to! Just because I haven’t seen you in two years doesn’t mean I forgot everything about you. I’m always going to be your big sister, Dem, and big sisters always know when their little sister’s are crushing on someone.”
I open my mouth to protest when something just clicks in my head, “Dallas, how did you get inside my house?”
My older sister lets out an embarrassed giggle, “Jared let me in. Why didn’t you tell me he was so cute?”
“Are you serious? First off, we just started talking today. Sorry if telling you that my butler is good looking just happened to slip my mind. Second, Jared? Out of all the people, you pick Jared!?”
“Demi, he’s gorgeous!”
I drop my head on the table, groaning. “Please god, just kill me.”
---------
I sneak a peek into the living room from the top of the stairs and upon seeing the room empty, I hurry downstairs quietly.
Tiptoeing to the garage, I open the door and-
“What are you doing?”
Jumping up, I clutch at my rapidly beating heart. “Damn it, Dallas! Don’t sneak up on me and I’m going out.”
“Sorry, how was I supposed to know you were going to get scared? Where are you going?”
“To a race.”
Dallas breaks out into a grin, “Ooh, can I come?”
“No! This one’s umm…private.”
“Demi. It’s a street race. They’re never private.”
Turning towards the garage, I grumble out a response. “Well this one is.”
“Ohhh, I know what’s going on.”
I look over my shoulder, squinting at my sister. “What?”
“You’re going out on a date with Selena tonight, aren’t you?”
I whip around, denying the statement immediately. “No! Of course not! I don’t date-”
“Excuse me, Miss Lovato, Miss Dallas,” Jared interrupts, pausing to grin at Dallas whose cheeks color with a rosy tint. Oh for god’s sake!
“Miss Selena has arrived and is waiting for you right outside the front door, Miss Lovato.”
I groan loudly, covering my face with my hand. “Seriously, Jared? You had to tell me that right now?”
Without looking back at either of the two, I hold my head up and stroll out of the front door, slamming it behind me.
Raising an appreciative eyebrow when I catch sight of Selena’s car, I grin at the girl who’s leaning by the passenger seat of her car.
“Hey, you.” I say, struck stupid by her simple beauty.
“Hi yourself.”
Selena opens the door and motions for me to take a seat, closing the door behind me. Strangely, this small gesture brings about a small blush which, thankfully, the darkness of the night helps to conceal.
“So where to?”
“There’s a race tonight and I was thinking w-”
Selena’s smile falters, “Another race? Demi I don’t-”
“Trust me, Sel. This one you’ll enjoy.”
The girl sighs but follows my directions nonetheless and we reach a different stretch of road. The crowd tonight isn’t as large as the one from last night but I know firsthand that these races are much more exciting. There are over ten different bikes lined up and I direct Selena towards an ideal spot.
“We’re just watching today. No racing, I promise. Plus because there is generally a smaller crowd, these races never get busted by the police. We’ll watch the race and then go out for pizza.”
Selena shakes her head, a soft smile playing on her lips. “Alright, come on.”
“Come on where?”
Instead of responding, the other brunette exits her car and comes around to my side, opening the door and pulling me up. I stumble a little and fall into her arms, embarrassing myself even more.
Selena pays no attention to my growing blush, climbing up on the hood of her car and holding out a hand for me to take.
“Come on here.”
Taking the hand, I scramble up on the hood, although not quite as gracefully as I would have wanted to.
Selena looks over at me and rolls her eyes, “You’re going to fall off the car like that. Come closer, I don’t bite.”
I scoot over, our sides pressing against each other, and lean to whisper in the brunette’s ear. “You don’t, but maybe I do.” I accentuate the point by tugging her earlobe gently with my teeth, ignoring the sharp intake of her breath.
“Demi!”
I pull away from Selena looking up to see Taylor waving in my direction.
“She races?”
I nod at the other brunette, waving back at the blonde. “Yeah, she likes motorcycles much more than cars. Miley races with me.”
“Wow. She looks good on that bike.”
I let out a chuckle, “Don’t let Miley hear that. She’s prone to getting jealous quite easily although I don’t think she’ll worry too much about you.”
“What? Why? I could totally be Taylor’s type.”
“Maybe, but why bother? You’ve already caught someone’s eye remember?”
Selena tilts her head to look at me, “Who?”
“Me.”
I answer straightforwardly and turn my gaze towards the road, a gorgeous red bike catching my attention.
“Dem, I-”
“Wait.”
I squint my eyes, trying to place the familiar bike when I realize that it’s headed right in my direction.
Where have I seen this bike before?
The rider stops directly in front of the car, swinging their leg off and pulling off their helmet in one fluid motion.
Oh, I remember now. The windswept hair. The gorgeous smirk. The stunning blue eyes.
“Hello, Demi.”
And the fucking voice.
Everything was coming flooding back now.
“Who is this, Dem?” Selena questions, looking lost as she tries not to stare at the gorgeous woman standing in front of her.
I don’t blame her. I’m having quite some trouble with that myself.
Before I can find my voice, the rider holds a hand out, that familiar dangerous glint in her eyes.
“Fox. Megan Fox, that is.”
A/N: I really had to rip my brain apart for this chapter. It just wasn't working for me. Aside from that, due to my recent obsession with the girl I have decided to encorporate Megan Fox into the story. Hope you liked it =)
