Gen 4 came out in 2007. 2006 in Japan.

Nope, HeartGold and SoulSilver were still Generation 4.

Well, Diamond/Pearl came out September 2006 and we got them in Spring 2007. Platinum came out September 2008 and we got it March 2009. HeartGold/SoulSilver were released September 2009 and we got them March 2010. Ruby/Sapphire, Emerald, and FireRed/LeafGreen were released in a very similar time fashion, though a little closer together to each other. So really, it's... right on time.

If current trends follow? Black/White will come out this fall in Japan, next Spring/Summer in America, the 3rd game (Gray?) will come out in Japan sometime in mid to late 2012 in Japan, and a possible revisit to the Hoenn region will be out in 2013, with Generation 6 coming out in 2014.

But yeah, I agree. It does seem practically back to back. FireRed/LeafGreen were like a year and a half in the US before Diamond/Pearl in Japan. =\
