Cool beans! You can improvise a drive band with kitchen cotton or something similar, fyi.

Yep. Twine works too.

Actually that kinda looks like an ashford traditional.

Excellent deal. Did you get any extra bobbins?

BUTCHER COTTON! WHEE! IT WORKS!

It's very similar to an Ashford Traditional wheel, though clearly not actually one. Someone did something weird in repairing part of the drive shaft and I'm 99% sure I've fixed it right, but... When's the next time you're going to be in Knit One? If I bring my wheel, will you take a look at it with me?

Edit: Yeah, there's something weeeeeeeeeeeeeird with the flyer. Either you can have it spin, or you can feed in yarn, but you can't do both.

handspinning is a great resource, as are the Spinner Central and Ravelers who Spin groups on Ravelry. Ask Questions! I have exactly one wheel that I have good knowledge of and that's my own, but there are some good experienced spinners in the burgh.

A lot of the time, lack of takeup indicates either a tension issue or a lubrication issue. Play with the tension knob, and make sure the wheel is oiled where it needs to be oiled-again, I'm not an expert on that type of wheel, I have a Babe and that's it. Since it's similar to an Ashford, you could probably find cubic tons of information on general maintenance, troubleshooting, and tweaking out there on the net.

Good luck, and welcome to the madhouse. :) I'm destashing some spinning fiber on Ravelry, by the way, she says coyly.

The problem isn't the takeup. It's... The way that my wheel is set up, the ring on the flyer that you attach to the drive band to should be close to me, on the same end of the flyer as where you feed the yarn in when spinning; however, on the actual flyer, that ring is far away from me on the opposite end from where the yarn feeds in. So when I try to attach the drive band to both the wheel and the flyer, it doesn't work because the wheel is off to the side of where the ring is.

Does this make sense to you? Don't worry if it doesn't - I'm planning on bringing it to Knit One to show Cosy sometime soon anyway.

*heads over to Ravelry*

That is IMO the best site for someone getting started. They have videos too. It helped me a lot when I first started spinning and I still refer to it from time to time when I'm having trouble with something.

I was going to recommend you ask Cosy or Linda (?). I can also get you on the Ewe Guys e-mailing list for the monthly spin-in.
