“So, remember how there’s the Republic and the Empire? Well, they’re fighting because the Empire wants control of the whole galaxy and it has control of most of the galaxy except for a few parts that the Rebels control,” Nelson explained, gesturing excitedly. Talking about Star Wars was one of his favorite things and it wasn’t often that he had such an attentive audience.
Tamsin’s small face was turned to stare up at Nelson curiously as he gestured excitedly and she asked, “What’s a republic again?”
“It’s a group of people who get together and vote on what they want to do.”
“So like here?”
“Yes,” Nelson nodded.
Tamsin nodded as if she understood, but as Nelson opened his mouth to continue, she asked, “And what’s an empire?”
“That’s when there’s one leader who makes all of the decisions.”
“Ohhh. . .what’s a galaxy?”
“We’re in a galaxy. When you look up at the sky at night, all those stars and lights? Those lights are other planets and a collection of planets and stars and lights makes up a galaxy.”
“Are rebels bad?”
“Not in this case. No, they’re good. The Empire thinks they’re bad.”
The entire conversation had started because Nelson had been working on fixing one of Oliver’s broken weapons and it happened to be the weapon that Nelson had developed based on a lightsaber. Tamsin, who already thought that Nelson was the greatest thing since sliced bread, wanted to know how he had come up with the idea. Which of course led to a Star Wars discussion.
“A light saber is like a power laser. It’s pretty and it looks kinda like a flashlight until you turn on it. You have to be careful because it’s dangerous. The bad guys have red lightsabers and the good guys have green, purple, and blue lightsabers.”
“And the good guys are Jedis!” she exclaimed.
“Right! But not every good guy is a Jedi and not every Jedi is a good guy.”
“But Jedis are special and really smart and can heal people. Like you and like Evie!”
Nelson colored slightly when Tamsin compared him to a Jedi. She was the only one who said things like that to him with such sincerity, besides Evie. Of course, Tamsin was only 5 and Evie was his girlfriend, but he wasn’t going to let that kill his buzz.
