Teacher refuses to give EOC test

A teacher in North Carolina refused to give his special-ed students the state-mandated End of Course Exam. He likely lost his job, but made a huge splash.

Here is his video...he can be a little snarky, but the end is very touching.

Today I observed our EC (exceptional ed/ special ed) department giving a test to a mostly non-verbal kid who functions at an early elementary level. Sample question: "Here is a picture of a fish, a buterfly, and a bird. Point to the one that most likely evolved from the now-extinct dinasours." And the math was 3 digit addition and subtraction that had to be done with no calculator and no pen or paper. When the kids fail, the school looses its funding.

If more of us teachers were as bold as Mr. Ward, it would send a loud message. If ALL of us refused, it would throw a huge roadblock into the whole system of state-standardized testing. This would, of course, be a whole lot easier if we had a union...
