Writer's Block: 9/11

Sep 12, 2008 02:19

September 11 is the day schools start in Greece. No particular reason as to the choice of day - it holds no national/mythical significance and I'm pretty sure no patron saint of schools or children is celebrated on that day (they're on the 30th of January, and they make a pretty good, glorified excuse to shut the schools for a day). I'd never wondered why we start school on that day until 2001.

It was my first day at the private school I'd gotten a scholarship for. My day was full of new experiences, a great campus, fantastic teachers, a girl who I later became good friends with (and then screwed me over - τι κάνεις Θάλεια μου καλά;)... I was so excited, happy even. It was the beginning of a new page in my life, one that looked (and later proved) very promising. Life was good.

I got home at 4pm, which translates to roughly 9am New York time; when the attacks happened, we were watching the news on tv in shock.

I remember thinking, I just started school today. And now this happens. Every time school begins I'll remember this day with sadness. And I did. Every year on the first day of school, all I would think about in the morning would be that day, and how contrasting it all was for me.
Today when I remembered, my mom was like "how did you remember?" and I was like ehhhh... dunno. ^^;

For the record, today was a super productive day for me. I opened an account at HSBC, got my hair cut, took pictures for my student ID card, bought underwear, AND met up with Mt (who's just back from the Czech Republic yay!), Danai and Dimitra. And I did all of that on roughly one to two hours of sleep. @_@ OVERDRIVE.

How was your day today? :)

sleep depravation, writer's block, kat thinks deeply sometimes, greece is mah home, international news, friends
