December 31, 1978

“Write them down, Remus.”

“What exactly is the point of this?”

Sirius Black sighed. “They’re New Year’s resolutions, Remus.”

“Yeah, and?”

He and Remus Lupin were seated on the sofa in Sirius’s living room. Ever since Remus had arrived five minutes before, Sirius had been trying to persuade Remus to write down his resolutions. Although they were due at the Potters’ house for their annual party, Sirius refused to leave until they both made their new year’s promises.

“We’re going to begin a new year, Remus,” explained Sirius. “That means we can try new things or make a fresh start. Come on, think of things you want to do this year that you haven’t yet. And then just write them down.” He handed Remus a piece of parchment and a quill.

Remus sighed and looked down at his forest green sweater and perfectly pressed brown trousers, an outfit that took a full hour to select (Gosh, he could be such a girl sometimes). He then looked back up at Sirius. “We’re really not going ‘til I do this, huh?” he asked as he took the paper.

Sirius smiled at him. “Until we both do this.”

Remus couldn’t help but smile back. “Fine.”

The two young men sat on opposite sides of the sofa and, using each of the arm rests as writing pads, quietly wrote for the next ten minutes.

“Remus? You done?”

Remus finished writing and turned on the sofa so that he faced Sirius. “Yes.”

Sirius pointed at Remus. “You go first.”

“I have to read them out loud? But then they won’t come true,” said Remus.

Sirius laughed. “Those are birthday wishes, you prat. Now come on, read them.”

Remus cleared his throat. Remus Lupin’s New Year’s Resolutions 1979

“Wow, you even gave it a title. That’s so Remus,” remarked a smirking Sirius.

Remus held his piece of paper up and started to rip the top. Sirius panicked and motioned for him to stop. “Don’t, don’t. I’m sorry; I won’t say anything.”

Remus looked down at the paper. I want to learn how to cook.

Sirius snorted. “You’re such a girl, Moony.”

“Hey, you should write it on your list, too. You can’t cook shit,” Remus shot back. As Sirius opened his mouth to reply, Remus continued: “And you can’t order take-out every night either. Besides, if I can cook, then I’ll cook for you.” Sirius closed his mouth.

I want to learn French.

Sirius slightly opened his mouth and leaned in to kiss Remus, but Remus pushed him away and gently swatted his head. “I mean the language, you tosser,” clarified a laughing Remus.

“Good, ‘cause you already know the other French,” said Sirius, winking at Remus.

I will try to get a pay raise at work.

“Just get a new job, Remus.”

Remus narrowed his eyes at Sirius. “You know I like my job, Sirius.”

Remus had been working at St. Mungo’s Hospital for two months after deciding not to follow in his father’s footsteps as a salesman. He’d been hired as a “Healer’s assistant” (helping directly with patients’ care), but when his supervisor was informed of Remus’s monthly condition, his position was changed to “assistant hospital caretaker.” This meant Remus mopped and swept the floors, washed the windows and chairs, made the beds, and emptied bedpans. When Sirius first leaned of this, he’d been enraged. But after Remus convinced his boyfriend that he liked it (“It’s my first real job, Sirius”), Sirius never criticized Remus’s work again.

“Okay, sorry.”

I will try not to be cantankerous before the full moon.

“Cantanka-what?” asked Sirius.

“Grumpy,” said Remus.

“Oh, that’s a good one,” said Sirius.

I will not pick fights with Sirius over stupid things.

“That’s one you better keep, Moony,” said Sirius.

“I will, as long as you don’t do stupid things,” commented Remus.

“I don’t do stupid things.”

Remus held up the quill. “Want me to write a list?”

“I’m still a teenager, Remus,” remarked Sirius.

“You have your own place and a real job; that makes you an adult, Sirius.”

“But I’m still young,” whined Sirius.

“That’s no ex-” Remus stopped himself. “Why don’t I read the last one?”

I want to move out of my parent’s house.

“And into mine,” said a grinning Sirius, lifting his eyebrows.

Remus rolled his eyes. “Don’t start, Sirius.”

“Just think about it, Moony. That’s all.”

Remus nodded. Sirius held his list in front of him. “My turn.”

I will try to get Remus to move in with me.

Remus held up his own list and grinned. “If it involves more writing assignments, I think I’d rather live with my parents forever.”

“Ha ha,” said Sirius before continuing. I will lose my virginity.

Remus looked confused. “Uh, Sirius, I think that already happened.”

Sirius bared his white teeth in a wide grin. “I know, but it never gets old talking about it, does it? When did we do it, again?”

“You’re so charming, Black,” said Remus sarcastically. “Go on.”

Remus and I will try to shag five times a week instead of the usual three.

Remus snorted. “I’d like to see you try. Who’s the one who’s always tired after work, huh?”

“Whatever, Lupin,” said Sirius.

I will let Remus top more often.

“Would you like that, Moony?” asked Sirius with a sly wink.

Remus blushed. “I really don’t mind, you know.” Remus was in constant awe of how good the sex was, and having Sirius inside him was the pinnacle of that experience. So, no, he really didn’t mind being the bottom.

I will finally persuade Remus to do that thing that I’ve been trying to get him to do for the past month.

“It’s going to happen this year, Moony. I can feel it,” said Sirius, nodding confidently.

“Oh, that reminds me; I’ve got one more resolution on my list,” said Remus as he quickly scribbled on his piece of parchment.

“What?” asked an eager Sirius.

I won’t let Sirius persuade me to do that thing which he has been pestering me to do for the past month.

Sirius laughed, and Remus shrugged innocently. “All right, back to my list,” said Sirius.

I will teach my boyfriend how to give a proper blowjob.

Remus threw his quill at Sirius, who ducked in time to avoid being hit. “You fucking wanker.”

Sirius threw his head back and laughed. “S-s-sorry.”

Remus shook his head and crossed his arms over his chest. “I haven’t heard you complaining. And excuse me for having a gag reflex.”

Sirius touched Remus’s arm. “I know, and I’m not saying they’re bad, Moony. But maybe I could help you.”

“What makes you think you’re so good at it?”

“Because I am,” said Sirius matter-of-factly.

“Fine, you are,” muttered Remus. Sirius beamed.

I will use dirty talk as foreplay more often.

Remus uncrossed his arms and looked at his wristwatch. “Sirius, is this what you wanted to do this for? Just to talk about sex?”

Sirius looked insulted. “Of course not, Remus.” He grinned. “But it’s fun, isn’t it?”

“Sirius, we’re going to be late for the party. Finish the list so we can go.”

I will make rimming a mandatory part of every sexual experience.

Remus stood up. “Sirius,” he warned.

“Wait, wait. I’m almost done.”

I will exercise more.

Remus nodded.

To make sex better.

Remus grabbed the coat draped on the back of the sofa and put it on. “I’m out of here.”

“Wait!” Sirius stood and walked up to Remus, who looked at him expectantly. “This is my most important resolution.”

I will make sure Remus knows that he, and only he, is the most important person to me.

Remus stared at Sirius. Sirius reached and up and touched Remus’s cheek. “You are.”

Remus continued to stare.

“I’ve known it for a while, but this past year-after everything we shared-made it very clear to me,” said Sirius.

Remus pulled Sirius toward him and embraced him tightly. After a few seconds, they parted. “Let’s go,” whispered a smiling Remus.

“Hold on; let me read you my last resolution,” said Sirius.

I will convince Remus to have sex with me everytime I say something nice to him.

“Sirius.”
