“So this is it, huh?”

Sirius Black nodded and smiled, quite chuffed as he showed off his very own place to his three best mates.

James Potter continued, “It’s nice, Sirius. Small but, uh, nice.”

The flat was small. As the four friends stood in a huddle in the living room, they looked around. The wooden floor hadn’t seen a broom or mop in months, and the cream-colored walls had faded to a dirty yellow hue. A long brown rope hung from the ceiling. Sirius looked from James to Peter Pettigrew to Remus Lupin, trying to read their faces.

“It’s going to look a lot better once it’s furnished,” said Sirius as he leaned his eighteen-year-old body against the front door.

“And painted,” James added.

“And decorated. You going to help him with that, Moony?” asked a grinning Peter as he glanced at Remus.

Remus, hands in his pockets, gave him a confused look. “Huh?”

Peter looked over at Sirius, an obvious smirk on his portly face. “You two should have no problem with that.”

Sirius stopped smiling and asked loudly, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

James suddenly found the floor very interesting and stared at it. Remus slowly shook his head. Peter turned pink as he glanced back and forth between Sirius and Remus.

“Isn’t it like, uh, something you, um, you people, like to do?” he asked before he could stop himself.

Seconds of silence echoed in the empty room. Sirius walked to Peter and stood right in front of him. Peter held his breath.

“Yeah, Pete, I’m doing all the decorating myself. In fact, I can’t decide whether to paint the walls pink or purple. Or maybe I should get some wallpaper with little rainbows. I sure do like rainbows. What do you think? Should I get a disco ball too and hang it from there?” Sirius pointed to the dangling cord.

A flushed Peter stammered, “Uh, I-I-I don’t know, I-”

Before he could finish, Sirius grabbed him in a headlock and rubbed his head with his knuckle. Sirius laughed as Peter struggled to free himself.

“Oww, get off me!”

“You better watch what you say in my house, Pettigrew,” joked Sirius as he kept rubbing Peter’s head.

James and Remus exchanged brief smiles. “Guys, cut it out. We’re gonna miss breakfast if we don’t leave soon. Come on, Sirius, show us the rest of the pad,” said James.

Sirius let go of Peter and clapped him on the back. The four walked six paces to the right and entered the kitchen. Sirius pointed as he talked:

“This is the kitchen. There’s the fridge, the sink, and the large square thing that apparently makes stuff hot.”

Sirius turned to face his friends. “We can safely assume that this room won’t be seeing any action.”

James smirked. “I thought that was your bedroom.”

Sirius punched James’s arm. “No, you’re thinking about yours.”

James and Sirius playfully punched each other a few more times before Remus sighed and started walking. Peter followed him out.

In a few seconds all four friends stood in front of a pale, yellow door. Sirius turned the knob and stepped into a smaller version of the living room. The walls were peeling, and the lone window was darker than the color of the walls.

“And this, my mates, is where you’ll sleep whenever you stay over at Casa Black,” explained Sirius.

Peter whistled. “I’ll have to transform into the rat if I want to fit in here.”

“Ha ha,” muttered Sirius as he ushered the boys out and led them to an adjacent room.

Sirius opened the door, walked in, and stood in the center of the room, which wasn’t much bigger than the one they’d just seen. He extended his arms out.

“This is my room.”

Remus and Peter walked around, but James stood in the doorway, staring at Sirius.

“What?” asked Sirius as he dropped his arms.

“Nothing,” replied James.

“Look, I know this isn’t the Potter Palace, but it’s my place and I like it,” said Sirius firmly.

“I said it was nice,” James shot back. The two boys stared at each other for a few seconds.

Remus sauntered over to Sirius and looked at James. “At least he’s got his own place.”

James opened his mouth to speak but then shut it. He turned and walked out. Peter smiled at Remus and Sirius before walking out as well. Sirius sighed and began walking when Remus grabbed his right arm and carefully pushed him against the wall beside the door. He leaned in close to Sirius.

“I think it’s fantastic,” whispered a smiling Remus.

Sirius beamed and wrapped his arms around Remus’s waist. “I knew you would.”

The two kissed until they were interrupted by James’s voice: “Oi, you two, get out here. Let’s go eat; I’m starving.”

Sirius rolled his eyes, and Remus laughed.

“Remus, just so we’re clear-what I said about the guest room doesn’t apply to you. You get to stay in here,” said Sirius softly with hopeful eyes.

Remus didn’t say anything. He placed a quick kiss on his boyfriend’s lips and then led them both out of the room. “Come on. Let’s go before James eats Peter.”

The hot July sun warmed the Marauders as they stood on the stony sidewalk outside Sirius’s flat.

“It’s my sanctuary from everything, James. From all that’s happening and all that will probably happen out there,” explained Sirius quietly as he looked out beyond the city limits, past the streets and buildings and open fields. They all knew what he meant. They lived in a world that seemed more uncertain every month. “Only place I got now.”

Remus reached out and squeezed Sirius’s shoulder. Sirius gave him a weak smile.

Peter suddenly laughed. “You got your very own bachelor pad, man. Even if it’s a tad small, you can do anything you want in there. That’s so cool,” he said.

“When do you move in?” asked James casually as he tossed small stones into the side of the tenement.

“Next week.”

James met Sirius’s eyes and smiled. “Swell. That’s swell, mate.”

Sirius smiled back. “I’m thinking of having a small party when the flat’s fixed up, you know, to celebrate.”

“Excellent!” exclaimed James as he fixed his glasses and combed a hand through his dark hair. “For now, though, can we celebrate by having eggs and toast? I’m starving.”

The four friends walked off.
