“You can stop dreaming about me. The real thing is right here.”
Luke slowly opens his eyes and finds himself staring into Reid’s blue eyes. He immediately smiles.
Reid crouches beside the bed and massages Luke’s head. “Wake up, Sleepy Snyder.”
Luke, still half-asleep, smiles at Reid’s touch. “How did you know I was dreaming about you?”
Reid pretends to be confused. “Uh, what else would you dream about?”
Luke closes his eyes. “What are you doing here?”
“I was on my way to work like a responsible adult”-Reid tugs Luke’s hair-“but decided to take a detour to come wish my boyfriend a happy birthday and see if he’s gotten his lazy butt up yet so we could go eat breakfast, my treat.”
Luke opens his eyes and stretches while yawning. “You said we were meeting ‘til tonight.”
Reid smiles at his sleepy guy. Damn, how he loves him. “Wanted to be the first to give you a birthday gift.”
Luke grins and lifts the covers, motioning for Reid to join him. “Then get in here and give it to me.”
Reid laughs. “Yeah, right. Your dad is still here. Who do you think let me in?”
“He’ll be leaving to the farm in a bit,” Luke said, finally waking as he winks slyly at Reid.
Reid moves Luke’s legs so he can sit on the bed. “No, sir. You’re getting up so we can go eat.”
Luke sits, his hair sticking up, and sniffs his underarm. “I have to shower first.”
Reid kisses Luke. “And brush your teeth.”
“I’ve had worse breath after certain things have been in my mouth,” Luke says.
Reid laughs and slaps the side of Luke’s face. “Don’t get cute.”
“You like it when I do,” Luke says in a teasing tone.
Reid rolls his eyes.
“So what’d you get me?”
“Get dressed first,” Reid says as tries smoothing down Luke’s spiky hair.
“Give it to me and I’ll get dressed.”
“You’re like a child, I swear,” Reid says, shaking his head. “You’re truly showing your age.”
“And you admonish me too much, Doctor. You show your age.”
Reid has to smile. He sometimes can’t believe how silly and fun life can be. He’s never been much into joking and teasing and laughing, not since he lost his parents and was forced to grow up quicker than most children. As an adult, before coming to Oakdale, he’d had good times but they were few and fleeting and never as enjoyable.
He attributes this euphoria to Luke, of course.
And Luke’s age. If he was in a relationship with someone his own age, Reid often thinks, he would not be having the fun he has now. Not that Reid cares how old-or young-Luke is. Reid knows he’d want to be with Luke Snyder no matter the age.
But at twenty-two-well, twenty-three now-Luke makes life fun.
Reid goes to the movies with Luke at least once a month; before, if he saw a movie in a theater once a year, he was impressed. Reid is a lot more sociable too, tagging along with Luke to parties, holiday gatherings, and family dinners. Though Luke doesn’t drink, Reid does and so do their friends so Reid sometimes gets drunk and life is even more enjoyable for those few hours.
Luke takes Reid bowling, shopping, to baseball games and a concert or two. Reid has danced in public (and not just in a gay bar, either), rode a horse, built a tree house for Luke’s brother, read detective novels, and played one-on-one basketball.
Reid also spends hours chatting on the phone with his boyfriend, something Reid never did before. No matter what time Reid gets home late at night, he will call Luke just to hear his voice. But since Luke is a talker, Glad you’re home, how was your day and good night don’t suffice. Luke likes to talk; he needs to talk, thus, Reid talks too.
And then there’s texting. Reid likes the invention of the text, just like he does email: “talk” to people without actually having to talk to them. But Reid never thought he’d be a social texter (is that even a word? Eh, it probably is now). He used to use his email and phone to only send directions and professional notes to everyone he didn’t want to call. But to Luke, he sends morning and evening greetings, love notes, sexy messages and silly pictures or quotes he thinks Luke might like.
Reid doesn’t mind having a boyfriend who regularly updates his Facebook account. Though Reid grumbles to Luke whenever he sees a post about himself, Reid silently likes having someone share good things about him to the world. Reid is more than okay with the public knowing that someone loves him and thinks about him and wants to write about him.
Reid enjoys exercising now. Before, he only did yoga and the occasional morning run as a stress reliever. Luke, always full of energy, has gotten Reid into swimming (Reid always looks forward to their bi-weekly swims at Snyder Pond and the make-out sessions that usually follow), and he and Reid try to run together every other Saturday and sometimes an evening or two. Reid, who likes being with Luke more than he doesn’t, cherishes this time together.
Reid especially loves Luke’s age when it comes to their sexual proclivities. Luke has only been with one other man and though he knows what to do in the bedroom, there are also so many things he doesn’t know, and Reid has fun showing and teaching Luke everything he can. And Luke, young and kind of inexperienced, is always eager to learn. Reid’s never had better sex.
And when they’re not having sex, they’re making out. Reid won’t ever admit it out loud but he sometimes enjoys just kissing and necking to actual intercourse. Reid could never do that with any of his former sexual partners, but with Luke, he can and he does and he likes it very, very much.
“Since you never do what you’re told, here you go,” Reid says, handing Luke a birthday card. Luke opens it eagerly and laughs.
Luke then lifts his eyebrows up and down. “You wanna give me those things now?”
Because of Luke’s age and vigor, Reid has learned to get it up a lot more frequently-sometimes within a short span of time-to keep up with Luke.
“Your dad.”
Luke pretends to pout. “You’re no fun.”
“I’m not twenty-three.”
Luke stares at Reid for a few seconds before looking down at the card still in his hands. “That doesn’t bother you, right?”
Ha. Reid touches Luke’s chin, causing Luke to look back up at him. “Of course not. When I’m with you, I feel twenty-two-well, twenty-three.”
“Do you even remember being twenty-three? I mean, that was like a century ago,” Luke says with a laugh.
Yup, his boyfriend is definitely young.
Reid pinches Luke’s cheek and then hands him a large wrapped box. “I should return this to punish you for being a nasty twerp but what the hell.”
“There are other ways to punish me,” Luke says with a smirk.
Reid laughs. Luke never fails to make him laugh. “Just open it.”
Inside is a sleek, black Louis Vuitton Porte-Documents Jour bag. Luke, his mouth open, caresses the leather adoringly.
“For work,” Reid says. “Or to carry around your pudding cup and comic books.” Yup, hanging around Luke makes Reid act young.
“This is beautiful, Reid, wow. I love it.” He pulls Reid by his tie until their lips meet. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Now, get dressed so we can go eat.”
Luke sets the card and bag aside and lies back, taking Reid along.
“Luke, your dad-” Reid doesn’t finish his protest since Luke’s tongue is inside his mouth, and a few seconds later, Reid forgets why he was resisting in the first place.
Luke kicks off his boxer shorts and then unbuckles Reid’s belt. He doesn’t remove Reid’s pants, though. He only pushes them down far enough to free Reid. As Reid enters Luke, he moans loudly.
“Shh,” Luke whispers deliciously in his ear. “We have to be quiet or my dad will hear us.”
Reid bites down on Luke’s neck so as not to moan even louder. Though he respects Luke’s parents and wouldn’t want to be caught doing their son in his bedroom, Reid is very aroused by the thought of their sneaky, secret sex. And if he wasn’t so turned on, he’d laugh about this-having sex in his boyfriend’s parents’ house is something he’s never experienced and would never experience if his boyfriend wasn’t twenty-three.
After they’re done, Reid fixes himself and tells Luke he’ll meet him later.
“But you promised me birthday breakfast,” Luke says from where he’s lying naked on the bed.
“You had a breakfast snack,” Reid says, straightening his tie.
“No one’s gonna die if you’re a little late . . . uh, right?”
Reid laughs. “No but-”
Luke jumps up, almost knocking Reid down. “Let me shower quickly and then we’ll go.”
“Luke, I can’t. I have to leave now.”
“We’ll have a quick breakfast, I promise. Give me ten minutes.”
Reid stares after Luke: so fit, handsome, young and his.
Yup, he will wait for Luke. He wouldn’t do it for anyone else because he’s never late to work, ever, but he feels twenty-three instead of thirty-seven that morning and if he wants to forgo being Mr. Responsible Adult for an hour, then he’ll be late an hour.
His hot twenty-three-year-old boyfriend wants to have breakfast with him.
