Politics and Cynicism

Feb 11, 2007 12:38

Last night at Mhefil Indian on Folsom St. (http://www.mehfilindian.com/), a place with an amazing naan (the Amritsari one) and a Zafrani lassi that's definately worth a try, the Gin Soaked Girl remarked that the level of cynicism directed at politicians among her generation is such that they (she) expects deceit, distortion, and misrepresentation from politicians.

Now, that's hardly particularly remarkable, but I think that the current administration has raised the stakes: instead of deception about 'normal' political issues (such as funding programs, new regulations or lack thereof, and justifying bureaucracy), we're now being deceived about things that result in hundreds of thousands of deaths.

But that aside, this morning, when I read about the "evidence" linking Iran to the IEDs in Iraq, I was immediately struck by the thought that all one can logically conclude is that the parts for the IEDs had come from Iran-the-place, and not (as the administration would like us to conclude) that the government of Iran is behind the IEDs.

Of course, maybe the government of Iran is behind them, but after the WMD fiasco, it would take more than this to convince us.
