I see better from a distance

Wow, hard to believe it's nearing the end of the year. The second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has already started, but right now, I've been reminded of the first season and its big event, the tie-in with the Captain America 2 movie and the remergence of HYDRA.

The Captain America 2 DVDs have recently released and eagle (or should I say hawk) eyed fans have spotted something very interesting. Near the end of the movie, HYDRA activated Project Inisight, a targeting program linked to 3 helicarriers which would take out individuals deemed a threat to HYDRA. As the program runs, we see lists of names and locations, including Tony Stark and Maria Hill (Fury's second in command).

Screencap of names here

One of the names was Aaron Cross (bottom right panel in the above screencap, among the last line of names). Nothing special at first glance, certainly nothing linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, a search of IMDB brings up the Bourne series, and a character played by Jeremy Renner. Who, believe it or not, plays Hawkeye in Avengers. Yes, Captain America 2 officially acknowledged Aaron Cross as a character within the MCU.

Cap 2 heavily featured S.H.I.E.L.D. (Hawkeye's employer) and the Black Widow (a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent he probably worked with closely), so Hawkeye's absence was pretty noticeble. Now that Aaron Cross is in the picture, this probably means that Hawkeye was working undercover during the events of Cap 2, using the Cross identity to infiltrate and investigate Outcome, another supersoldier program. Perhaps I could go so far as to say that when Outcome started eliminating its subjects, Hawkeye didn't just escape, he rescued one of the scientists with a mind to recruiting her for S.H.I.E.L.D.

One little easter egg with breathtaking implications, kudos to the fan(s) who spotted it.

avengers, fun stuff, movies
