Crysis 2

Been playing Crysis 2 for over a week. After all, what better way of trying out a new system than getting a game that's notorious for demanding hardware requirements. Looks great, of course, with almost all the settings at Ultra. Despite getting Crysis 2 more for the graphics, I was pleasantly surprised by the gameplay itself.

Man, it's been really long since I've played an FPS. If I recall, my last shooter was Gears of War. Not even Gears of War 2, but the original. Coming back to the genre with Crysis was definitely enjoyable. I really love the Nanosuit's armor, speed and stealth capabilities. In fact, at the start of the game, the assault rifle I had was pretty inaccurate, so I often resorted to charging at soldiers and bashing them instead. That stopped when I started encountering the aliens, since their return blows could easily kill me. And then bashing became a viable option again when I picked the Armor Enhance mod, which allows the suit to take more damage before draining all it's energy. Indeed, it's almost become my panic button. If an alien suddenly pops up too close, I turn on armor, charge it and bash it to death. Not viable for two or more of them close together, but the tactic has gotten me out of more scrapes than I can count.

I know I've been pretty much out of the loop, but FPS games seem to have gotten more visceral. I love the way soldiers take cover and curse and yell for help when I've got them pinned under fire. And with the Nanosuit's powers, sending cars and soldiers flying is pretty much a piece of cake. Even the aliens, which seemed pretty formidable at first, are now manageable with upgraded suit powers, a little caution, and stealth kills.

One amusing thing. I was pretty clueless about why the aliens were called Ceph. What did 'Ceph' stand for? And then the soldiers started yelling 'squid'. Oh, Ceph was short for Cephalopod. And then I wondered, if they were squid and octopus and such, would they have the legendary Kraken? True enough, I ended up facing off with a giant 3-legged mech quite similar to an angular Metal Gear. And I was really thankful I stocked up on anti-tank missiles, because my stash, plus the additional I found, was only just enough to kill it. I hate to imagine resorting to grenades and C4. Although, with upgraded mobility and stealth at that point, I was actually able to sprint around for a while in stealth mode.

All in all, Crysis 2 has been quite enjoyable. I look forward to finding out more about the conspiracy subplot to infect the suit with the alien virus. I suspect the intentions are good, but what will it mean for my character?
