Been watching quite a few movies this month. Last week , it was Chronicles of Narnia with my friends. This week, it was Rapunzel with my aunts and today, Tron: Legacy with my brother.
Narnia was ... okay, I guess. Certainly, it was a change from the Lord of the Rings-ish large scale battles of the first one. This one was more like a personal quest, more intimate. Thing was, I didn't really feel for any of the characters, so I was mostly just curious about what would happen next. Eustace getting turned into a dragon was definitely a surprise, though I thought the dragon looked somewhat cartoony. On the other hand, the sea serpent was an interesting mix of reptilian and insectile, especially when it spread its hood to reveal that it was fringed with claws/centipede legs.
In contrast to Narnia, I thoroughly enjoyed Rapunzel. The title character was determined and plucky, Flynn was charming and, man, I loved the two animal sidekicks to bits. Especially Pascal the chameleon, who deftly conveyed emotion with just a few changes in expression and posture. Finally, at the end of the movie, the name of Flynn's voice actor looked rather familiar. I was most amused when I looked it up and found that it was none other than Chuck, from the TV series of the same name. Geeky Chuck playing a charming rogue? LOL, I would never have believed it!
I also enjoyed Tron: Legacy, though it was probably more for the in-jokes and CG effects, especially since I saw it in 3D. Fav one was the Grid scene, when they pass Sam one of the controllers for a lightcycle and he holds it like he thinks it's the handle of a lightsaber, LOL! I also liked how the vehicles evolve throughout the movie. Seeing a lightcycle take form is one thing; seeing Clu leap into the air and have a fighter jet assemble around him is another thing altogether, and a mighty damn impressive sight too. All in all, my brother thought the black and neon looked kinda retro, but I felt they did a good job of updating a look that's over 30 years past. It's worth a watch, I think, since you probably won't see anything quite like it any time soon.
