Man, I've been looking forward to this for a long time. I mean, I only saw the teaser last week, but this season has been rather heavy on the angst and was desperately in need of a lighthearted ep. I'm glad to see I can always depend on Edlund to deliver!
Only Supernatural would link crop circles to fairy rings, LOL! But as protective coloration, man, it's damn ingenious.
Dean's panic and Sam's reaction during Dean's abduction was hilarious. The way Dean kept yelling "Close encounter!" and then Sam going "Third kind already? You better run, man, I think the fourth kind's a butt thing." And Dean yells back "Empathy, Sam! Empathy!" LOL, I nearly died laughing. And Sam's fascination, as though he was actually wishing Dean would get abducted. And after Dean gets back, LOL, on top of his shock at having gone through an actual alien abduction, he finds Sam in bed with a girl, definitely not out looking for him. Dean really gets the short end of the stick in this ep!
Other things to love: "I've had time to adjust" (to Dean's abduction a mere half hour ago). Man, it's really great not to have a soul to get in the way of proper hunting, eh Sam? ;p And then Dean dealing with the newest fairy assault by microwaving it. And finally the image of a tiny, tiny teacup in Sam's gigantic hands, like he was drinking from a toy tea set. Though I thought Edlund was trying a bit too hard when Sam asked Dean did he "service Oberon, King of the Faries". But after that, when Dean was inquiring how to interact forcefully with the fairies, LOL, I could tell he really wanted to take them down. Hard.
Throughout the case, despite Sam's penchant for brutal honesty, it's interesting to see he didn't fare too badly when confronting Brennan, and later the leprechaun. Still, the leprechaun's offer to get Sam's soul back ... I'm not really inclined to believe that a leprechaun can punch a hole in Lucifer's cage, even from a different dimension. Like Crowley, what he's offering and what he's actually capable of doesn't quite seem to tally. Still, I'm interested to see if this offer will come into play further down the season, just like the fact that Dean's now 'marked' by the fairies and whether it will have any repercussions later on.
Sam turning down the deal is logical, given what he knows about deals going sour. But was that the real reason? Now that Dean's told him that with a soul, suffering's the only game in town, is Sam having second thoughts? Would Sam rather be unfettered, going about life without a conscience weighing him down? And finally, the question that was never answered, why do fairies abduct firstborn sons. Does this tie in with why the vampires are raising an army and the skinwalkers planting sleeper cells, though it has to be noted that the fairies have been doing this far longer.
