Been playing Mass Effect quite a bit this past week. The last RPG I played was Neverwinter Nights 2, so this is a big step up in terms of graphics. In fact, I thought the opening cinematic was prerendered, until the camera flew through the ship and swung around to face my character. And then I realised that this couldn't be anything other than in-game, since what I saw were the facial features that I'd just customized.
Gamewise, it's definitely much faster than NWN2, with an emphasis on quick reflexes especially with the decryption minigame. It's a bit like an RPG Halo, what with the shields and vehicle combat. But it's also got space exploration, all the travelling between star systems and surveying planets and asteroids. Really brings back fond memories of Starflight. Anyway, after a week, I've only begun to scratch the surface. The amount of background detail for the universe is amazing, especially since there's usually info on the history, culture and technology of the veritable menagerie of alien species inhabiting the game universe. Even the science is pretty realistic (I found a throwaway reference to Bose-Einstein condensates, in a description of ammo mods no less!)
Anyway, it's been a week and I've barely scratched the surface. I've just cleared out the invading Geth machines from Feros, and that's just the first in the initial set of mission planets.
