[ buffy has been running on autopilot. smile at the right times, nod in the right moments. make the appropriately inappropriate remarks about over-sugared coffees and pop music at all the wrong times in just the right ways. it isn't hard to do once she sets her mind to it; after all, she had done it in sunnydale for seven years ( Read more... )

[settling in doesn't really take a great deal of time...not when most of your belongings can fit into a single bag. But later in the afternoon, it isn't hard to find her sitting in the living room, scratching Cupcake's belly while flipping through journal entries]

[ sometime post-spellage but pre-patrol, buffy sorta blusters her way through the living room with a hefty looking battle axe in her arm. no reason, really. just...moving it around. she'd left it in the kitchen and thought she'd better put it away before bones gets all googly-eyed over it.

but she slows to a stop as she sees jilly in the room. ]

O-oh. Hi. [ a small smile -- just a little awkward but mainly because it's new...getting used to someone else in the house again. ]

Hey. [she glances up with a smile....and then arches an eyebrow at the axe.]

...remind me not to make you mad.

What, this? [ she snugs it up against a wall (destined to be left somewhere else where bones will gripe about it) and grabs a casual seat across the room from jilly. ] Can you believe it was a birthday present? Almost everyone punks out and gets the Slayer sharp and deadly things for her birthdays and for Christmases. It's like the Chosen One's version of the hand-knit sweater.

[laughing] It's a step above a pair of socks, at least.

I could kill for a pair of socks. [ SHE JOKES.

buffy shoves her blouse sleeves up her arms and sits back. there's a little beaded bracelet on her wrist that she's fidgeting with -- she'll get to explaining its significance in a moment.

but first: ] I just got in from having a friend of a friend of mine work some mojo on the house. You know Giles, right?

And you've even got the tools to pull it off.

[the question gets a smile]

Yeah...we've talked. And...been related. [...this place]

[ what's the best way to make a long story short?

hmm. ]

Giles is -- he's from my world. I've known him since I was sixteen. Every Slayer gets a Watcher and he was mine. [ her second one, at least. ] I had him put a spell on the house. Nothing too flashy...but it's one we've used before against a similar big bad and it'll let everyone in the house know if Grell tries to get close. Sort of like a mystical car alarm.

[ she holds up her wrist, shaking the bracelet. ] Now, Giles' room-mate? Helios? He boosted the first spell and now if she tries to get here, this little bit of bling'll let me know even if I'm out on patrol. [ buffy pauses -- significantly. ] Jack's got something that'll do the same.

[ and finally: ] Helios also put up a ward against Grell specifically. With any luck, it'll mean she physically can't get into this place. That just about makes it a fortress, in terms of this whole situation. If any of us think that she's upping the threat? We're to come back here.

[ buffy stresses the we; she doesn't want jilly to ( ... )

I see. [it's reassuring, really. Nice to know that they have some safety that actually stands a chance of warding off a threat so large. But she has to be sure...]

It's still business as usual, right? Day to day things, with this as a backup in case of trouble?

[she might just go crazy if she was under house arrest]

Exactly. And a place to run to if things get less than comfy elsewhere in the village.

[nodding] That's reassuring.

...Is Jack feeling a little calmer, with all that in place?

[ a noncommittal kind of sound. ]

Jack and Giles aren't all that palsy. They are most certainly not pals. [ she admits this with a bit of hesitation -- it's letting jilly in. underlining the fact that there are more complications involved with her and the pirate than the complication occasionally named jilly. ] His appreciation for the mojo is grudging at best.

...Well, I appreciate it.

Has anyone heard anything?

No. And that's either very very good or very very bad. There's never much middle ground with these things.

[a sigh] And we can't exactly ask her which it is.

[ buffy has a mind to. ]

So it's not the most ideal situation, but we'll make it work. Always do.
