[Oh, this comes at a great time. Shikamaru's been meaning to speak with her ever since his conversation with Albert. A bad cold just got in the way for the past week.]

You're Buffy Summers, then?

[He's positive you are. But you know. Being polite.]

Nara Shikamaru. I'd be interested in talking to you about that combat school, if you have the time.

I've got plenty of it. Time, I mean.

What's on your mind?

It's probably best to be discussed in person. I can explain it better that way. [Hi, I'm a ninja and have a healthy does of paranoia when it comes to the journals.] Is there somewhere I can meet you?

The bar? I'm not working, but I can grab a booth.

Works for me. Meet you there in thirty?

I'll be there.

[ and she will be! though she probably should have said something about expecting the teeny blonde. ]

[Well he knows she's blonde and he knows she apparently works there. All he has to do is ask the bartender to point her out to locate her when he does arrive. 8|b]

Yo. Sorry if I kept you waiting.

Hey, don't sweat it. It's not often I get to hang out here and not have people shout orders at me.

Heh. [He nods to that and slides into the booth.] So about this combat training... you said you're the only one involved with it now?

Well, I'm the only one coordinating it. There's quite a few teachers, though.

That's good. I wasn't sure, when I spoke to Albert Silverberg about it.

To cut to the chase, with the change in upper management among our good friends the Malnosso, it's probable that we're not going to have as much to work with on the upcoming drafts as we did before. There's not a lot we can do to plan for that without making things more troublesome for ourselves but prepare to fight as best as we can in case we're dragged out there.

There's two ways to do that. [He raises a finger here.] Teaching people what to do in combat is one thing, and I'm glad someone thought of it. I think it's done a lot to help. But on the last draft I noticed few of them were really capable of working with anyone but their friends, which is dangerous too. You can't always work with people you know.

I came up with an idea to help with that and presented it to Albert. He told me you'd be the best person to talk to about helping me work it out, if you're interested.

Colour me very interested. [ especially if albert had thumbed her specifically for this sort of interest. it means a lot -- better than any other sort of sorting and filtering service. ]

It's a good point. I think it'll be a little tricky to implement but a massive advantage-us if it can be done.

[He nods.] It'll take a lot of work to get it going. What I have in mind are short-term teamwork drills. They'd be designed both to teach people how to work together on short notice, and to help them find people they'd do good working with.

Like you said, it'll be tricky. [And hardly ideal. Then again, the way this army works isn't really ideal either.] We'll need volunteers and such, and for some people it'll be about as difficult as picking up a weapon. But I think it could pay off.

Teamwork doesn't come naturally to a lot of us, no.

[ this she knows and is occasionally guilty of. ] I think we can grandfather it into the rest of the training, though. If you're up to it.
