Readergirlz: August 2010

Aug 03, 2010 08:24

This month, readergirlz are discussing Holly Cupala's debut novel, Tell Me a Secret. I hope you'll pick up the book from your local library or bookstore, give it a read, then talk about the book with other readers at the readergirlz blog - and, bonus, join in our roundtable discussion.

Here are two scoops of secrets to whet your appetite. First, the jacket flap summary:

In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda's death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams - a best friend to unlock her sister's world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all - Miranda has a secret all her own.

In this powerful debut novel, stunning new talent Holly Cupala illuminates the dark struggle of a girl who must let go of her past to find a way into her future.

Read, Reflect, Reach Out

This month's outreach has a direct tie-in to the book. Here's Holly Cupala to tell us more about it:

"Even though TELL ME A SECRET is not about sexual exploitation, it is about women and secrets and dealing with shame, so I felt there was a connection there.

"Ten percent of my author proceeds go toward World Vision's Hope for Sexually Exploited Girls, helping girls all over the world who have escaped from this kind of abuse - food, medical care, job training, and if possible, a loving family situation.

"Thank you for spreading the word to help support these girls!"

Join the readergirlz

readergirlz is an online book group that's open to everyone - the only requirement is a love of reading!

Every month, we discuss a different book, ranging from realistic fiction to fantasy (like Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld), from historical fiction (such as Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson and Miss Spitfire: Reaching Helen Keller by Sarah Miller) to contemporary fiction (such as The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart). All of our spotlighted books celebrate gutsy girls.

Every issue of readergirlz features additional information about the books we're discussing, exclusive interviews with and playlists created by the authors, and additional book recommendation. In addition to our annual events such as April's Operation Teen Book Drop, we also include information about national or international outreach programs related to the book of the month in every issue. We hope to inspire readers to become active not only in book groups but also in their communities.
