i've had this idea for a while. Putting together a dystopian novel with elements from all my favorite stories and genres and rolling them into one.
The story will be based upon a girl, who after refusing to do as the head council or their underground society wishes, is cast out in to the dread (what they call the world above). Since the society is the governing body over everyone, disagreeing with them is a big no no, and depending on the level of disagreement, something they reason to be treason, varies. Some are jailed, some are put on house arrest, but those who go against rules in which their survival is based on (marriage, family, work, worship)it is an immediate, without trial sentence to the dread.
In this world, the society chooses everything for you. From the clothes you wear, to what station you are, the person you marry to the amount of children you have. There is one governing religion, but are many branches and the society chooses which one you fit into upon birth. Going against that is the most cardinal sin and you WILL be shunned (which is essentially being cast out). I want to base the society off of the Amish society. What with a there is a governing religion, but none of the rules are based off the religious text.
Casting out can be scary, and is usually a sentence given to those who have committed graver crimes. Murderers, thieves, ect...
Essentially the world below ground is a prison within a prison.
The outside world can be cruel. After some hundred years of darkness caused by some cataclysmic event, an event most of the world has forgotten, a world that was once technologically advanced, and civil has seemingly gone back in time. Clothes are made from animal hide, the men hunt, women take care of the children and garden. It's cold, snow littering the ground from any where of a few inches to a few feet. It is a thriving society that is centered around the god Thor.
To honor Thor, there are sacrifices of the human and animal kind. The human sacrifices are made in the heat of battle within an arena. They do have gladiator fights, and are a treat to those who get to see them. There aren't a lot of them, and most criminals are fighting in them.
The girl goes from a strict world to one where she is free but lives in a different kind of fear...
That's all I got for now.
