Braeburn apples, 89c/kg. Buttercup pumpkins, 99c each. And it's feijoa season! Autumn's the best time of year. I bought nearly 8kg of apples. I had apple crumble last night and have just taken some apple muffins out of the oven.

My local Bin Inn hasn't had any sort of beans for months now, except adukis. I asked the owner, back when the black-eyed beans ran out, and she said that every shipment of beans coming into the country has been found infested with moths and beetles and sent back where it came from by MAF. They want to protect our unique biodiversity and all that, fair enough, but why not have things inspected before dragging them across an ocean and back? And, more to the point, is there any reason beans can't be grown in New Zealand?

Anyway, the bean famine has been averted by a shipment of organic red kidney beans, nice-looking shiny ones. Maybe organic bean farmers are more careful about keeping insects out of their beans because they can't just poison them dead once they move in. This Bin Inn is getting in more and more organic food: organic gluten-free pasta came in a while ago, there's environmentally sustainable sugar, and the owner hints that more is to come. Gone are the days of bulk bin shops selling mainly lollies and rice bubbles by the shovelful!
