Autumn is the season for apples and feijoas, and right now I live on a section which has two trees of each. Free food, whenever I want it. I can't wait to get into my own house and plant heaps of food

I've had soo many feijoas this season from my mum's trees. And mandarins and apples from my grandmother's place (her pear tree still has to fruit). But I've discovered that food is very cheap if one knows where to look. I bought about 1.5kg of apples recently for $0.49 (they were seconds - one had a bit of easily cut away rot...) - and there is a fruit show near me that currently has kiwifruit at $0.39 a kg!
Nut trees would be great. I keep hearing birds rolling things down my roof, and I found out they were walnuts when I found some on the deck. I don't know where they get them from though.
Go on, share your cheap food tips! I don't have wheels and haven't even been to the fruit and vege shop for ages, only to the supermarket when I get a lift. The produce there is so insipid.
Location is very important - I'm lucky to be near lots of great places for getting food (like fruit/vege shops, and health food shops). It helps to grow a vege garden too. I'm at the point that anything over 50 cents is becoming a major investment!
I've found it very helpful to ration my food days in advance (I do my daily nuts up to a month in advance). And sprouting is a good way to grow a nice breakfast! Plus, never turn away free food that might come your way :)
I don't really know much about you, you seem like an interesting person. You seem to have more in common with me than the majority of people I know... (ah to finish my thesis and talk to people again!) If you want drop me a line at dr_sponge@livejournal.com! :)
