An excellent find: a Hubble Space Telescope calendar for $5. Now I know what day it is AND I can research how to draw a picture of a nebula at the same time. Next to it, a horse calendar for $2; five out of twelve pictures are not of Arabs, Thoroughbreds or Quarter Horses, a very impressive proportion. In fact there are even Fjord ponies.
My current challenge, apart from drawing a nebula, is to develop a cyborg character who operates alone, flies around in a vast ship, has robot companions and is generally inimical; the design stipulates "Lots of weapons, scary-looking, six arms". It's going to be difficult to make him original and interesting, with all the cyborg villains floating around in my consciousness. If he gets too evil, he's too much like the Borg, Cybermen and Terminator. If I make him more sympathetic, a loner who wants only to defend himself from anyone's interference, he becomes too much like Kligson (from the Star Wars comic Droid World), especially if I play up his expertise at robotics and his mechanical friends. His appearance is a bit troublesome too: I have to design him without going too far in the direction of inbuilt life-support apparatus (too Darth Vader) and I have to handle his overabundance of arms without giving the General Grievous impression. This is further complicated by my exposure to Bionicles, which all look like cyborgs and have lots of weapons. I haven't even started on designing his spaceship.
