Summary: When you ask yourself for a favor, how can you say no?
Notes: My first attempt at writing the Third Doctor. But it came to me in the middle of the night and I had to write it down...
The Brigadier entered the Doctor's lab to find him tinkering with some device. He sighed in annoyance at the phone call he had just received. "Doctor, there's an urgent call for you."
"Tell them to wait. I'm a bit busy," was the distracted response.
"He said he was an old friend of yours. But he gave me your clearance code. Care to explain?" The Brigadier was not surprised when the Doctor picked up the phone without answering his question.
"Hello?"
"Ah, yes, hello! How are you?" the voice on the other end replied in a jovial tone.
"I thought you said this was an urgent matter."
"Oh, right, I did. The thing is..." There was a brief pause. "This is rather embarrasing... I was hoping I could, um, borrow a key."
The Doctor was not in the mood for games. He was anxious to get back to his work. "Key for what?" he asked. He vowed the answer had better be good or he would hang up the phone right then and there.
"The TARDIS. I'm locked out at the moment." There was another pause and then the voice continued in a whisper, "I think she thinks it's funny. I asked politely. I even promised to buy her something nice from..."
"So use the spare key." The Doctor had the phone half way to the receiver when he realized his other self was still babbling.
"Right. Already tried that. Last time. But it's been a bit hectic, if you know what I mean. I was going to put it back. I swear."
"Fine. I'll give you another key." Judging by the voice, he was guessing it was a future self calling for the favor. He briefly contemplated which idiot had come up with the idea that age brought wisdom.
"Really? Great! I was thinking over the 'X' this time. You know, 'X' marks the spot?"
The Doctor stared at the phone for a moment then quickly hung it up.
The Brigadier watched in confusion as the Doctor dug around in his pocket and produced a key. He then moved a stool next to the TARDIS and proceeded to secure the key over the 'X' in 'BOX'.
"Who was that?" the Brigadier asked as the Doctor returned the stool to its original location.
"Just a friend asking for a favor."
He looked at the Doctor then at the spot where the key was now safely attached to the blue wooden box. "Right. Of course. I shouldn't have asked."
