Writer's Block: Agree to disagree

Oct 01, 2009 22:23

I am very good at this because my dad has no concept of how things actually work in the world since he suffered brain damage and was in a coma with encephalitis. He was declared mentally competent afterward, but he can't (or won't) see the big picture. He has very strong political views which are the polar opposite of what he believed before the brain damage and I see things more closely to how he saw things before. I was an infant when he was in the coma, I have no memory of it.

When I was just entering adulthood he and I would have political arguments where he would say "Doctors and the people who take out the trash in hotels should be paid the same." and "We should be taxed 100% and the government should provide for all our needs.". I tried to point out the flaws in this, but he couldn't include anything else in his perception of reality. We dropped all political discussion for a few years, I developed a hatred of republicans to match my hatred of democrats, and now we discuss politics at the joke level. (which is what politics is, except it's not funny)

I tend to avoid political discussions as I now consider them beneath my dignity. I have no political opinion, only an economic opinion.

writer's block, disagree, grudge, argument
