I think there are likely levels of "good" in katanas like I know there are in other swords.
You've got "good for hanging on your wall" (pretty from 3 feet, don't use them for anything. These are the ones you can find for 99 for the set from anime or "sword collectors" shops. They're being sold along with LotR bobbleheads and "real Highlander" swords.)
You've got "good for a mass produced piece" (pretty up close, weighted okay for use, don't count on the blade lasting long if you're doing anything but swinging it around in a kata. These are likely the kind you're going to find for 2-300 at a collectors shop. They're being sold beside the real gold LotR rings and the higher end "collectables".)
Then you've got "good for an amature artisan" (the best swordmaker of your region hand-crafted it using quality materials. He's going to stand behind it because his name is attached, and it will probably serve you well. You're not going to find these for 200 at a collector's shop. You're going to likely find them by talking to someone who knows him, or contacting the artisan yourself).
Then you've got "good" (one of the best swordsmakers in the world crafted it. You could count on this thing if you were in a full out fight. You're not going to find these in a collectables shop, because they aren't mass produced. They're made individually. I also could never hope to afford one. (*Grin*))
Then you've got "really good" (it's an actual antique).
I generally know the grade of weapons, and how to gage them accurately (or decently, i guess) I'm more thinking about the fact that this is folded steel (which is generally alot more expensive, from my research) Now, I'm not saying these guys (the people who are selling it) aren't freakin nuts, but If it's strong (and believe me, I'm gonna stress test the absolute balls out of it) I'll buy more. I'm looking for strong, sharp weapons that can last in a decent fight (I wouldn't be twanging blades anyway..If I'm being blocked, I've done something wrong.)
