Fear of spiritual things is actually quite common. The first step to overcoming a fear is to recognize that you have it and exactly what you are afraid of.

Fear of becoming a flake? Define "flake". If you can define what the term means to you, then you should also be able to determine the means to avoid it.

Fear of being wrong and calling something malevolent?? That's where research and study come in. IF you do your study before starting any practice, it minimizes the chances. Big clue: Control your anger - do NOT do anything in anger.

Fear of being 'too good' and being lost in it?? I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) that this particular fear leads into the fear of "becoming a cult leader and sacrificing the people you love". There are two major causes of such things occurring - anger and ego. Spirituality and/or magick are bad places to be if you haven't gotten control of those two things.

Why do you think I restrict my students like I do?? Hell, if they knew the restrictions I place on myself, they'd be shocked. My students aren't allowed to do ANY spellwork until I'm satisfied that they've learned the basics - grounding/centering/shielding, along with history, theory and ethics. THEN they start learning about the various deities.

Suggestion: Do a TON of research and study first. Focus on the spiritual side of things for a while and leave the magickal stuff until you better understand things and yourself. As far as magick demanding sacrifice, to a degree, yes. I would be concerned about the particular path if it demanded so much that you sacrifice everything and everyone around you. A sacrifice of time and effort is normal in anything, but the sacrifice of relationships is cause to step back and re-evaluate things.
