As I remember it: Having spent her entire childhood through the age of eighteen wanting to be a firefighter when she grew up, the one hundred ten pound, bright as sunshine valedictorian of my graduating class was to go on to major in fire science. She was going to save little girls that needed saving like she needed saving as a little girl, like she was saved as a little girl. And all you hear when you're that little girl grown up is that you are, in fact, a little girl. And you can't. And it's too hard. And you're going to fail. Now, I'm not a woman of faith, but I held out faith for her. I still do, five years later, after she has let her plans fall by the wayside. And I'm wondering if giving up a dream, when the alternative is easier, is the path of least resistance, or if it is the hardest thing she ever did. But in the midst of the disillusion, all my starry eyed pride is displaced and grafted on to you.
