This Needs To Be Spread A Bit

For the cosplayers on my FL who have ACP accounts, until the end of the year, ACP will be donating the proceeds for Celestial Account memberships to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund to assist in the defense of an Iowa collector charged with possession of obscene manga.

Just in case you're one of those souls who do not have an ACP Celestial Account, or have a friend who doesn't have a Celestial Account, or are stalking someone who doesn't have a Celestial Account, this is a good opportunity. You/your friend/your victim gets all the benefits of having a Celestial Account, plus the money is going to a very worthy cause.

Or, of course, if you guys already do, then might I recommend just making a donation direct to the CBLDF anyway? Or stalk more people, whichever. XD I've already put my money where my mouth is by making a direct donation.

Why Support the CBLDF And This Cause? Jumping a little bit into politics here, but whatever.

Just for a straight-up opinion on the actual case matter: this is a dangerous precedent case, and regardless of my feelings about the merits of the case, I think the underlying law here is pretty stupid. I'm not going to lie: if you asked me if the material was likely obscene graphically, I think odds are I probably would find it obscene. This is likely H-manga after all. That said, especially in the situation, without actual real harm being committed to a minor, I'm not fond of imprisoning someone. And no, I do not believe that removing an influence to crime is sufficient reason for the law to be upheld, otherwise I'd have to support banning all violent video games or violent news stories or whatever because they might influence someone to commit a crime.

I'm not particularly keen on punishing people for doing due harm only to themselves at most. It's a fairly libertarian idea, and a pretty good one. I'm concerned that this law is an overreach. And even if you think in this instance that maybe the law is being applied justly, unless you're fine with censorship by prurient community standard, it's good to oppose this lest this becomes case law to strengthen not only PROTECT, but any other law that might come afterward.

Even if you don't care about this particular case, keep in mind the CBLDF is a very worthy cause to donate to if you're a fan of comics, manga, anime, etc., and care about civil rights. Even without considering this case, there's plenty of reasons to donate to the CBLDF.

shameless plug, politics, acp
