Ooops...I may have ranted on my lj to someone who insisted that "Dogs like that are in great risk of becoming fear biters. I guess I'm cold enough to think that in most cases dogs with a double handicap like that one are better off not existing..."
This is a pet peeve of mine...
"Tink is very special. Partially sighted, suffering Rubber Puppy syndrome and with a skin problem that causes it to tear and split. Even her human would describe her as a genetic wreck. And yet she lives an incredibly rich life, and even has a seeing-eye german shepherd, by accident :)
In my opinion there is a human out there for every dog. Only when all avenues are exhausted should a dog that is not suffering be euthenased. It is by stupid breeding to make them coform to physical criteria they were never genetically disposed to fit, criteria laid down in this country by The Kennel Club, a group of people who should know better, who claim to be dog-lovers and should in fact not be allowed nearer than 400 feet to any other living animal, that cause problems like these. We, as humans, whether directly involved or not, are the cause of these ills, and we should do our damndedst to make sure that they get a good life.
Other people may disagree, but I can't see why we should deny them the life they're perfectly capable of living with a bit of effort. And yes, I do feel strongly about this :) Which is why I have a Willow, a dog genetically incapable of falling off a bed without getting lost on the way down :) "
