Today in 1945, Bob Marley was born.
Today in 2006, my batik and colored pencil portrait of Bob Marley was completed.
Here's the story behind it...
I was taking a batik workshop with Jeanne Sisson. After doing some "
animals" and such I returned to 'doing people's faces.' In the line up was Bob Marley. He was one of the only images to survive the unsuccessful attempt at
drawing with "water-proof" ink.
When his dyeing was completed, I attempted another
experiment: I decided not to have the wax removed via dry cleaning. The process of ironing the batiks to remove as much excess wax as possible before dry cleaning (something we never did in art school circa 1972) actually created an interesting effect -- the fabric became stiff like paper.
And like paper, I decided to draw on it with colored pencil.
And MARLEY! was born!
