Hipster Douchebag: is there a threshold?

I've been wondering if it's possible to descend, slowly and unnoticed into the land of hipster douchebag.    Is there some line that you can see coming?

  • Recently, i was hanging out in a slightly hipster-y neighbourhood in Seattle and I suddenly realize i'm wearing skinny-type jeans and flip-flops.

I don't have an answer to your question. But I'd like to chat about the word itself. I recently used this word in a speech (for school) and someone younger than me provided me with feedback and said that I shouldn't use words like that. Not everyone knows what a hipster is.

But the word has been around since (and perhaps even before) the 1920s. Even my grandpa can define hipster - it makes him sound like a modern with-it kind of guy.

But gosh darn it. The word hipster isn't all that hip. At the same time I don't think there is anything wrong with having you take on certain specific hipster qualities. But I'm with Sharolyn on the whole arm warmers thing.
