[Charlie had been watching the pie-making with fascination. She hadn't seen anyone do that in years. Not since her mother. When the other redhead starts talking, Charlie is first and foremost impressed at how friendly she seems. Secondly, she has no clue the other woman will be able to see her face. She hasn't quite figured out how her journal works. Oh, well. Hello, Anne. Have another red-head.]

That wasn't disruptive at all. It was...neat. You look like you know exactly what you're doing and I'm a tad jealous.

Jealous? Oh, don't be. It is not very hard to learn and I certainly would not mind teaching. Really, the most difficult part is the crust and I can simply never get them as tender and flaky as Marilla's very own recipe but I still try. That is probably the most important part about baking -- the trying. It's awfully key to always try.

Practice makes perfect. [Pause.] I'm Charlie. I'm a New Feather. [Another uncertain pause, nose wrinkling slightly.] Is that the right term for me?

Well, I suppose that does depend -- doesn't it? Have you just arrived? Just arriving is often the surest sign of a New Feather.

[ charlie, though. what an odd name for a girl! ] I'm Anne. Anne Shirley. Anne with an e.

I got here yesterday. Woke up in what I'm guessing is my place. Apparently, that's highly unusual.

Anne with an e. Okay. I'll remember that.

And, truly, your name is Charlie?

That's a lovely name for a girl. I never would have considered it to be so, before.

It's Charlene, actually. Uh...my parents called me Charlie. It sounds prettier. Charlene is a nice name, don't get me wrong. I just prefer Charlie more.

Where did you say you were from? And do you need help with the pies? I have to admit, learning how to make them is interesting.

Avonlea. It is just a small village but it is awfully nice.

[ she sounds a little hesitant when describing the place. too often has she had people here claim that her little village is fictional. that she is fictional. she's never sure how people will respond. ]

I like small villages. [Charlie's just focusing on the 'small village' aspect.] And it's a pleasure to meet you, Anne.

For the longest time I thought for certain I'd prefer a bustling, exciting city to a small village. And then I visited one for quite a while and I found that although the entertainment is rather...ah, entertaining -- it doesn't quite have the same romantic flair as a small little town.
