Title: Duet
Author: slashybits
Characters: Lester/Lyle (OC)
Rating: PG. slash
Warnings: None
A/N: Of course Lyle belongs to the lovely fredbassett who graciously lets us play with him. The track James is enjoying so much is Au fond du temple saint (In the depths of the holy temple) from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers which is a stunningly beautiful tenor/baritone duet that is guaranteed to send me to my musical happy place every time. This ficlet was inspired by hearing it performed live last Tuesday night and partly by a drabble by kerry_louise about music that had me thinking about the quiet moments.

As a bonus I've uploaded a copy of song performed by David Hobson (Australian Tenor) and Teddy Tahu Rhodes (New Zealand Baritone) the two I saw in concert this week.

Thanks to kamadu for the beta.

And yes the notes are in danger of being longer than the ficlet *sheepish look*

Faint noise drifted from the direction of Lester's study drawing Lyle closer. The view inside made him pause at the doorway and lean against it, unwilling to disturb the occupant of the room. A smile lit his features as he took in the relaxed state of his lover.

James was sprawled comfortably in his favourite overstuffed chair, tie loosened and the first few buttons of his crisp white shirt undone. A glass of brandy was cradled securely in one hand, the other resting along the arm of the chair, fingers moving in time to the music.

Head tilted back, the lines of strain that had become all too common lately were smoothed away with his relaxation, lips quirked upwards with the barest hint of a smile.

Jon barely stopped a huff of amusement as he watched his lover's bare toes conduct in time with his fingers.

Two male voices twined together, one deep, the other lighter as the orchestra built behind them. Unbelievably James seemed to relax even further into the armchair, his enjoyment intensifying the expression of pleasure on his face.

Unguarded, carefree and totally in the moment, was something that Jon rarely witnessed in the older man. He took in every detail he could, committing it to memory.

The duet reached a peak and trailed off as the orchestra finished. As the last notes ended, James opened his eyes, unsurprised to find his lover observing him.

"I'm sure you could have found something far more interesting to watch on the television," he teased, contentment edging his voice.

"I don't think so, sweetheart. I'd prefer to watch you anytime," Lyle replied quietly.

Eyebrow raised, Lester inquired, "Even over football?"

Jon made a show of thinking about it then shook his head with a cheeky grin.

"Careful darling, you are in danger of being soppy."

Lyle shrugged, unconcerned and entered the room. Leaning down he gently snagged James' tie and tugged him upwards into a kiss. Breaking apart when it threatened to become too heated, Jon rested his forehead against his lover's for a moment before straightening up. "Good day?" He queried softly.

"Hellish actually, but it's ending well," Lester responded.

Jon headed for the sideboard and poured himself a drink, turning he asked, "Mind if I join you?" He didn't miss the flash of surprise that crossed James' face. Lester nodded, making a show of seeming unconcerned, but he was obviously pleased.

Lyle settled into the matching armchair, making himself comfortable. Opera really wasn't his thing at all, but if it made his lover that happy perhaps it was time he gave it a chance.

Both men relaxed into a companionable silence, one becoming lost again in the music, the other to the contemplation of what he was listening to and who he was with.
