Oh my god. I have listened to this fanmix over and over and over and over and over. I have it on my iPod, I have it on my computer, and I even played two of the songs on the show I have on WUEV. Seriously. Seriously. I love this fanmix more than words can say.
I sent an excessively long, rambly review to Trisha. Be warned: there is little grammar or care about proper sentences.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.) leaves falling - lullatone
Okay wow could there be a better intro song to this fic. Just...what. Straight from the start it is the PERFECT mood setter. It's so soft and innocent, but at the same time it's very powerful. Tranquality hits you just as hard as the confusion mixed into it. It's simple and disarming and just everything I ever wanted. There is not one other song in the world I can think of that is as perfect as this
2.) Treehouse -- I'm From Barcelona
apeofijepofeijwf Seriously. It's like she has magic music powers. Spencer wanted the grove in his trees for himself, but he loved sharing it with Brendon and just. How perfect. is. this. song. and it's the perfect mood. A uplifting, kind of wild little number that makes you laugh and swing around. All I think of when I hear this song is the sun shining down and being blistering young. And honestly I LOVE this. It also works when he moves to Manddolore! THIS SONG. Just. "Nobody can see us. Cause it's a you and me house." Perfection.
3.) Fly Me Away -- Goldfrapp
I'm not a huge Goldfrapp fan in the first place so I was a bit hesitant. I don't know if I like the mood as much the prior two, but the lyrics are PERFECT for what Spencer thinks about Brendon. "The crazy little things that you do are magical." Just. A+ mixer. A+ for you. But it has a dreamy feel that I know 17 year old Spencer felt when he saw Brendon again. So I have to accept that this song is in the perfect place.
4.) Marrow - St. Vincent
Oh
My
God
What
This song is crazy as FUCK and just pdofijapfoijf Have I said perfect enough yet? This kind of clinical sound of her voice, the dark, looming background that sounds like your listening to the thoughts of a schizophrenic. It's so depressing in all the right ways, and it really fits the intense moment where Spencer sees Brendon in the auction, I think. The "H. E. L. P." thing just blew me away with the rightness of it. Not to mention the "If you could only go somewhere else." Seriously. This mixer is the most perfect mixer in all the land.
5.) I'm An Animal -- Neko Case
;~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~; oh my god. I couldn't stop the tears. I could quote this entire song and it wouldn't be enough. The conversation with Ryan, talking to Brendon, and like. This entire song! Oh my god! My courage is roaring like the sound of the sun! Oh my god! I love you this hour! This hour today! SO LET'S NOT WASTE TIME THINKING HOW THAT AIN'T FAIR. DID I MENTION THIS ENTIRE SONG OH MY GOD. I needed to like take a break after this. Utter, complete perfection for the ENTIRE scene after Spencer buys Brendon and when Spencer ~helps~ Brendon >:D
6.) In My Next Life, A Workhorse - The Luyas
I was a bit frustrated because there are no lyrics to this that I could find, but I understood all the same the message the song conveyed. The anger inside some of the lyrics really reflected in the conversation Brendon and Spencer has after he wakes up from surgery. "Please leave the things we speak of to the biographers," "Please feed my remains to the workhorses," and not to mention "Decide. But I don't know, I don't know, I don't know." . The genuine melancholy in this song really spoke to me. And once again an ace song for this spot in the fic.
7.) Love Kills - Robyn
I was bit blindsinded by the change in tone! We go from the quiet, gentle song to this very loud, upbeat techno almost dance song. But can you say accurate lyrics? I particularly like "You can see your dreams and you shield yourself. 'Til that one kind soul reveals itself." There's not much to say other than I don't know if I agree with the aggressive jump in sound, but the song has a lot of meaning in its place of the story
8.) (Nothing But) Flowers - Talking Heads
SCREAMING WITH LAUGHTER. THIS IS SPENCER SMITH ON MANDDOLORE SO HARD. OH MY FUCKING GOD. I laughed myself blue in the face. Holy shit. Especially after Spencer broke his ankle or whatever. apofiewpfoiejwa Just oh my god. This song. That perfect tone of "Fuck this shit. Really."
Things I particularly love:
"We caught a rattlesnake. Now we have something for dinner."
"If this is a paradise I wish I had a lawnmower" (OH MY GOD SERIOUSLY. SPENCER SMITH THIS SONG IS FOR YOU)
"We used to microwave now we just eat nuts and berries" (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THIS SONG)
I can't even handle this. This song is just A+ for Spencer's POV on Manddolore.
9.) Body - Thao
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. "It's good to see you. It's too good see you." I mean really. Really. Unbelievable. The first time Spencer sees Brendon on Manddolore this just. This song oh my god. You're just a dead man and I have to shoot the gun. This unfettered hostility. The disbelief that Brendon could still be so cold. A scene it drawed me to in the fic was this one:
When Brendon dumped him unceremoniously on a couch Spencer struggled to catch his breath, mind racing. “Is this...?”
“Yes my house. Shockingly the Scis can actually fend for themselves without humans there to intervene.”
“I wasn't...”
“You're a human. It's okay.”
I mean, really. "I'm just a body in your bed." So f'ing good right here."
10.) I Can't Touch You Anymore - The Magnetic Field
Fetal position, crying ;~; Again, I could quote this entire damn song and it wouldn't be enough. This is completely and a 100% Brendon's view point the entire time Spencer's at his house. I mean oh my god. "There's so much to hate you for." And just. My heart. It fucking clenched. Because it's like the inside of Brendon's head and no one was given a seat buckle and your just crashing into this fucking flood of emotion. "You're asking the wrong questions. Your opening the wrong doors. I love you. I can't touch you anymore." Blunt and sharp and in tune perfectly the inside of Brendon's thoughts. Completely beautiful and perfect.
11.) Shut Up I Am Dreaming Of Places Where Lovers Have Wings - Sunset Rubdown
There's nothing negative I can say about this song inside this mix or out. Spencer Krug is the most perfect man on the planet, and this song only further proves that. The first time I saw it on Anna's fic journal Beggar Notes I was in love with it, and it's mood, magical and dreamy and wild and ancient sounding, influenced this fic heavily. It's one of the songs I can forever listen to and never get tired of it. In the context of this mix it is absolutely stunning and I felt my entire body seize up with the connections it makes at this point in the story.
High points in relation to the mix:
"He wants to send you drawings. Drawings of men with faithful hands"
"And if I fall into the drink I will say your name before I sink" (perfect for after brendon rejected him when spencer showed up to apologize for the kiss)
"I'm tired of waiting"
Just. This is a beautiful spot for this song. \o/
12.) Cry For Everything Bad That's Ever Happened - Le Tigre
This is the one song I could go with or without. I feel like it's a nice build up towards the final porn, but idk if it's needed in the mix. Feels a bit filler, and I don't really feel moved by it
13.) Lover's Day - TV On The Radio
The song that does it all. PERFECT for the porn scene and then the joyous, rowdy ending is absolutely the most perfect thing ever for the wedding itself. I just feel like dancing and singing along when I hear it and it's just this wonderfully dirty, passionate song that doesn't give a fucking fuck about anything.
Overall this mix is absolutely a 1000% perfect and i would not have it any other way. this is an EXCELLENT interpretation of the fic via music, and I am extremely proud to have gotten it
Another funny thing that occured to me while listening is that she put Sunset Rubdown in here -- and thinking of Krug made me think of Wolf Parade, of course. On Apologies to Queen Mary in
"Dinner Bells" Krug sings "You're the lion's mane" which made me think of "It's vain about it's mane" in I'm An Animal. Since I see I'm An Animal in Spencer's eyes (or at least 3rd person about him) and Dinner Bells in Brendon's POV I found this quite amusing indeed :333
Once again, thank you
ruintooeasy for this AMAZING mix. I love it so, so, so much.
