Topanga freezes as she walks into the room just in time to hear the people with whom she works discussing her daughter like she's an actress or some other famous person who's been caught doing something terrible. "Are you kidding?" she asks, her voice sounding funny even to her own ears. "Please tell me you're kidding." But she knows they're not.

She shakes her head slowly. She's always hoped to see this kind of prejudice die out -- to see all prejudice die out really --, but this particular brand is just as strong as it's ever been. It's why she protects Cory and Shawn even to this day and why she always will. Perhaps it is also the reason why she wasn't surprised at all when Riley first came to her about the development her daughter had not expected to take place in her friendship with Maya. Riley hadn't expected it, but Topanga had.

Just like, she acknowledges silently, she had known this day would come, too. "Yes, she married early. Her father and I did, too."

"Yeah, but you're not -- "

"I'm not gay?" she finishes for her coworker. "Yeah. I'm not, and I know how you're thinking." Her gaze encompass the room just as if she is standing in a courtroom trying to convince a jury of her defendant's innocence. But her heart this time is more bold and surer than it's ever been in any courtroom, because she knows her daughter's innocent. Riley and Maya are innocent of everything but falling in love with wonderful people, just as Riley's father, Topanga's own husband, and Shawn were before them.

Topanga stands her ground. "Yes, I know what you're all thinking," she declares, "and you should be ashamed of yourselves. We are lawyers and other people working together to defend people who are innocent, and these children innocent of everything but falling in love."

"With each other," a man toward the back of the group grumbles.

"Yes," Topanga answers, staring straight into his eyes despite the distance that separates them, "with each other. They are two wonderful people who fell in love with each other. Maybe they did marry a little too early. People said that about Riley's father and myself, but our early marriage never deterred my career or who kept me from doing what is right. Cory has often helped me to do exactly what is right, and that's what I did when I gave my daughter and her wife my blessing."

"Yes, that's right. I gave them my blessing, and they will always have it. Those girls could have done so many horrible things, but they have never done drugs, fallen into prostitution, or done anything else truly bad. This isn't bad at all. They're following their hearts, and that's always a good thing. I hope when your children follow theirs, you'll support them as I always have my girls." Her statement made, Topanga turns and walks from her judges, her head held proudly and her heart, as always, full of love.
