This is exactly 500 words...

~Wings~

Gamble stared down, noting his fatigues and combat boots. He was obviously dressed for a mission, but he couldn't recall exactly what that mission might be...

"Well," a nearby voice said, "You'd better get moving, soldier!"

Gamble sprang forward, silent and anxious.

In front of him he saw former friend and partner, Jim Street. The man looked grim, but lean, as he pushed through his daily workout. Brian grunted, pressing to meet the man's stride. They ran side-by-side along the quiet stretch of beach.

Gamble wasn't surprised Street ignored him. They both stopped, panting, when Street's former girlfriend moved to block their path.

'Jesus,' Gamble thought, annoyed. 'Ignore her, Jimmy!'

No sooner had the words run through his mind than Street turned his face away and began retracing his steps across the sand. Gamble could see Lara was calling out, even though he couldn't hear her words. It was clear Street had heard, even though he didn't bother to acknowledge her...

'He did what I wanted him to do,' Gamble realized. Was he glad -- or not?

Before he could make up his mind, time sped up and rushed past them...

Street remained fit, but his expression became more and more wooden.

Street entered a bar and sat down beside his friend and S.W.A.T. team leader, Hondo Harrelson.

"You need someone in your life," Hondo said, bending close to Street. "It's not healthy always being alone."

"I'm fine alone," Street replied, not meeting Harrelson's eyes.

Gamble sat down beside Street and leaned toward him, nodding. That's right! You tell him, Jimbo!

The moment blurred away.

Gamble continued joining in Street's daily workout. It felt good to press himself to sweat beside Street. It reminded him of days when they'd shared runs and held each other's feet while they did sit-ups and crunches.

Another day dawned, bright and clear. The ocean curled friendly foam against the hot sand as Street walked aimlessly along, dog Chopper at his heels.

An unfamiliar man approached them and Gamble saw Street's eyes light up as he returned the stranger's warm and welcoming grin.

"Beautiful day," the man said.

Gamble could feel a wave of hope swelling Street's chest.

Gamble moved forward and slipped inside his friend, forcing Street to take a step closer toward the man. Gamble lifted his chin and felt Street do the same.

'Do it, Jim,' he thought, willing his friend's action.

"Yeah, great day," Street replied, voice gruff. He smiled when the stranger placed a warm hand on his shoulder.

Gamble felt himself rising as he began a heavy upward march. He stared down briefly to where Street and the man stood talking below him. Suddenly Gamble heard a small tinkling sound. Then the rough bark of a sergeant major rang in his ears.

"Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings!"

Gamble grinned as he felt the pressure of large feathers sprouting through the shoulder blades of his fatigues.

It looked like he'd be flying back up to heaven...
