Yellow eyes bore intently into a sweet face they've loved now for years. He has tried so hard to make both their lives something to be commended, but still they falter. Still he cannot seem to rise above the perils of being a mutant, let alone one who seems destined to wear the X-badge, nor has he been able to help his beloved escape the same perils. He has tried so often and so hard, even sometimes leaving Bobby to do so. In the end he's always regretted his decisions to leave, and he's always come back to whatever team far more to be rejoined with the man he loves than to simply fight for a dream that he, secretly, stopped believing in some time ago.

Hank wipes Bobby's hair out of his face. His hand hovers on his temple. A purr catches in his throat even as tears wet his eyes. Oh, how he wishes he could just escape it all! How he wishes he could take the man he loves, flee this life, and never, ever look back! Every time he's done so, however, and equally, every time Robert has done so, they have always ended up being brought back not just to the dream that seems more and more impossible with each passing day but to this very school on this very land. Hank leans down and kisses Bobby's forehead.

He has several Pulitzers and has invented things of which no mind before his ever conceived. He is believed to be not just one of the greatest geniuses of his time but of all time. Still, he has no answers. He has no way to rescue them, to keep them safe from the pains and sorrows of this world. All he can do is to try his best to make sure they're safe each day and make sure his beloved is happy and knows he is cherished. He can guarantee him nothing further than that, no matter how greatly he wishes otherwise.

Hank curls his considerably larger body around Robert's frame. Bobby stirs in his dreams. Hank kisses him again and again, each kiss tender and chaste, until Bobby stills. He stops squirming in his sleep, and his mouth, rather than crying out, closes again. "Sleep well, beloved. I am here," Hank purrs. He won't sleep tonight, but he will watch over his love as he does.

The End
