Blurb: SFPD detective Gabriel Sandalini might as well have put a gun to his own head. One red-hot sexual encounter in a bar’s back room has put two years of deep undercover work in jeopardy-two years of danger and deception as he worked his way into crime boss Ricco Botelli’s inner circle. Gabriel can’t afford emotional entanglements. Hell, he can’t afford emotions. But that was before he had a name to pin on that anonymous one-off-Miguel Ortega.
Miguel Ortega doesn’t trust anyone, but tough, street-smart Gabriel brings out the conquistador in his Spanish blood. But distractions are nothing short of deadly right now, not with his boss’s impending marriage to Botelli’s sister, which will ensure peace-and massive drug profits-for both families.
On a trip to Mexico to set up drug supply lines, a violent confrontation proves they’ve got each other’s backs-to a degree.
Then one savage act changes everything, testing not only their fragile bond, but Gabriel’s will to live.
Once upon a time, some time ago I read another titled by Laura Baumbach and I swore I would never read another one. If you want to read over blow sex with very little plot, go right ahead. (In fact there is another title associated with this work produced by Laura, that I have no intention of reading
South of the Border, for those who might be interested.) I don't particularly care to read things that are nothing but a series of loosely strung together moments that force the main characters into bed--or anywhere else--which each other. I don't mind sex but put plot with it. The main reason that I picked up this title was the fact that it's associated with Josh Lanyon, whose work I have come to respect.
I decided to give this title a try and to be honest I was not at all disappointed with it. This book is a fun mix of the talents that both author's possess. The plot and the characters are good as I would expect from a Layon work and there were some pretty hot sex scenes as well. Which I will attribute to both authors. I will say that, Baumbach did manage to keep things twisted up in her scenes, which can be fun but I want more than just hot sex. :)
I enjoyed this book, the ending surprised me I didn't expect things to go that way and it was rather sweet and heartbreaking all at the same time. I think mostly I am somewhat disappointed that this 'series' never continued. It would have been interesting to see where it went. However, as a book it was a good read and a nice mix of drama, suspense, plot and sex. :)
