Dammit, why didn't one of the tenured faculty in our number set up a 400/500 level class for us?

POTT.ST 407/507

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Literary Analysis and Social Effects

(online course, all campuses)

[cross-listed with W.ST, CULT.ST, LIT, PHIL, HIST, MED.ST. & COMM, RHET/COMP, COMP.LIT, FILM.ST, EDUC, ETHI, REL.ST., INT.ST., HUM, POL.SCI, PSYC.]

enrollment: open
course cap: 8.2 million

course texts:
  1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (req'd);
  2. HP 1-6 (rec'd);
  3. other readings tba

The course examines aspects of the concluding book of Rowling's series using a broad range of literary and cultural theories, including: reader-response, feminist, New Criticism, post-structuralist, queer theory, media studies, postcolonialism, narratological, deconstructive, psychoanalytic, New Historicist, and more. The effects of the "Harry Potter Phenomenon" beyond the text will also be examined: as new media and an IP issue, as popular culture, social movement, and a community forming factor.

As well as reading and intensive online discussion, the class requires several short "reaction" papers and at least one longer analysis. These will be based on close readings of the text or responses to it (they can include media coverage, author and/or fan responses, and broader cultural entailments).

Formats for short and final papers may include essays; fictional or poetic responses; art and other image-based interpretations including video; personal and diaristic forms; or sociological studies such as survey-based analyses. All "papers" will be posted online; comments and critiques on in-progress and final submissions are welcomed, but optional.

You've all already earned an A!
