Patrick Stump, I did not need your distractions this morning. I'm supposed to be finishing a late assignment and prepping for a final and surviving this bloody dental pain.

But! Patrick has discovered that he's a synaesthete - welcome to the pack, sweetie :)

And while managing to copy an entire sentence about neurology from Wikipedia, he also ( Read more... )

I didn't notice my synesthesia while I was growing up.

But you noticed eventually! Did you figure it out on your own that it was a way you were different, or did you read about it somewhere, or...?

I noticed my synaesthesia when I was about 3 but I was 5 before I worked out that nobody else in my family or class seemed to see things like I did (typical sort - letters, numerals and words in colours although pre-literate I experienced everything as a taste and things from that time still appear to me as such, tastes are shapes as are sounds). Didn't actually mention it to anyone else until I was 16 when I was explaining to my mum as to how I was able to remember things so clearly, I felt, was down to the fact that it was all different colours in my head and mum said "Oh, there was something on the radio about that the other day" and that was the first time I had a name for it and the knowledge that other people did it too.

I learned what it was called when I was 10 or 11 (randomly, from the dictionary), but like you, had long noticed both the traits themselves and that nobody else seemed to have them. I definitely played with my coloured numbers as far back as I can remember - I used to do elaborate counting/patterning games at night.

The tactile thinking was the one where I felt like I was being "warned" if I wasn't careful enough. I grew up in a pretty redneck environment, and people definitely let you know if you stepped outside the lines. I couldn't tell if it was *what* I was thinking or *how* I was thinking that was getting that reaction. I don't think you can really divide them! I seem to have made a deal with myself that I wouldn't hide the things I thought - but that I would hide the way I was.

Thank you. It's nice to have people to talk to about this, sometimes :)

Yeah, it's nice to talk to some-one who gets it because all my friends tend to spend their time going "What colour is my name?" for hours on end. :)
