Title: The Schemer and the Helpless
Rating: T, hint at M
Pairings: Connor/Abby [mentioned], Danny/Lester
Summary: Sometimes, people just need a push.
Notes: From P100, the prompts [50] Desire, [57] James Lester, [89] Fools Rush In, [26] Dining Out. A fix-it to 'Oblivious'.

Danny acts like himself but Abby sees it. There’s a little jealousy in his eyes whenever he sees her and Connor together. But he never acts on it, just swallows and looks away or focuses back on the mission. She doesn’t begrudge him his looks or his slight jealousy, so long as it doesn’t interfere with the job.
But then again, she’s also the most perceptive of the team, at least on interpersonal matters. She’s seen Lester watching Danny when Danny’s focused on Connor. She’s seen the hint of desire in his eyes.
Time for some scheming.

First, to actually make Danny see Lester in that light.
So out came the offhand remarks about how well Lester’s suit fits him. How handsome he is. The fact he actually can defend himself against creatures, which leads into the mammoth story and a laugh but admiration in Danny’s eyes. And that Lester really did care, despite the facade.
It takes Abby a month of dropping hints and then it happens. Danny looks up at Lester’s office, a sort of small hope on his face.
She almost sighs in relief. She was starting to run out of things to praise.

Danny doesn’t wait for too long. So he wipes his sweaty palms over his jeans one more time before entering Lester’s office.
The man himself looks up with a raised eyebrow. “Danny, what did you break now?” he asks, annoyance in his tone but there’s something else there as Lester eyes Danny.
“Oh nothing yet,” he says, “just wondering if you’d care to get some dinner after work?”
Lester is silent for a few moments and Danny starts to panic.
“So long as you take me someplace better than a common pub,” Lester says slowly.
Danny grins and nods, relieved.

Danny met Lester outside the restaurant at 6:15. Lester, out of his usual suit and tie, seemed slightly nervous and hell, that was nothing compared to how Danny felt.
But dinner went well; no mishaps, no awkward silences, no calls from work. Instead, there were lots of smiles and laughs [on Danny’s part, at least. Lester chuckled, never full out laughed].
At the end of the dinner, Lester smiled, really smiled, at Danny. “Shall we do this again?”
Danny grinned and nodded. “Come over for some coffee?”
“Depends on the kind of coffee.”
Danny gaped and Lester full out laughed.
