Signal Boost: Shelter in Crisis/helping closer to home

May 22, 2010 02:08

from the itty bitty kitty committee:

The Berkeley East Bay Humane Society has suffered a tremendous loss. A fire destroyed a huge portion of their facility (cat sheltering area, laundry facility and offices) and sadly took the lives of fifteen of their cats.

They are need of monetary donations and foster families to temporarily house their dogs and cats. If there is any way you can contribute, please do.

To visit their website and make a donation, click here.

Another way to help, is just by spreading the word. So please share, link or tweet their story.

Thanks, friends.

I've a friend in South Carolina who works two times a month at a (free) spay/neuter clinic who IM'd me last night to say that her transport list for Tues includes 3 cats, 5 chihuahua/yorkie/silkie terriers, 3 cocker spaniel sized dogs, 4 labs, 1 golden retriever, 1 husky, 2 german shepherds, a St. Bernard, a collie, a pit bull, and 2 Great Pyrenees dogs scheduled.

Can you imagine how much of an impact this load is gonna have on the pet overpopulation explosion situation?????

One problem:
Our transport van can only hold 3 large sized dog crates. That's right. Three. (3). One less than 4.

I need large sized space for 13, and all I can think about is those poor little cats.

Can't all fix the oil spill, or put the planes back in the sky, or beat the bombs that have already fallen into plowshares that the people who were killed could have used for fields. But man, if there's a way to help in some tiny fashion in your own neighborhood- pick up that plastic bag that's blowing around, and stuff it with the trash that's lying in the parking lot between your car and the store, or, i dunno- be creative. Go play with the animals at the local shelter. Follow Tweets for Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Make quilts for babies in intensive care. Send your old unwanted books to ReUse First at Better World Books. Something.

Go drive animals on Tuesday, in South Carolina. It's supposed to be beautiful. . .
