It's been a long time since I've actively bothered to comment on fic writing, but this made me feel it was wholly necessary. I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart, because as far as I can tell, good quality writing is thin on the ground for this pairing in this fandom, and it's so refreshing and rewarding to finally find some.
And also, you've absolutely nailed everything that's important for good fic: there's no needless and jarring repetition, none of the clichéd 'pet names' (cause I have read the words Straight Edge Superstar WAY more times than can ever have been necessary), your characterisation's spot-on and believable, and you've made their interest in each other convincing without having to make them into guys in skirts/girls with dicks and I really appreciate that. Plus you managed to capture the fantastically taut tension that's there in all of these guys' physical and verbal interactions, and spin it into something wonderfully subtle, realistic and exciting. Fan-bloody-tastic !
Please please, any more where this came from will be eagerly lapped up and tbh I think a talent like yours kinda owes itself to such a starving pairing ! (I will stop guilt tripping you now, but I will be keeping an eye out for updates) ;) Once again, very, very well done, fantastic work, thank you so much for sharing !
Well I've got to start by saying that I'm completely blown away and massively flattered by a comment like that! If what I wrote drove you comment where you normally wouldn't then I take that genuinely as a massive compliment *blushes*
I know exactly what you mean about the standard of writing in a lot of fics - the cliches and pitfalls drive me nuts when I read other people's work so I do my best to steer clear of them. Also the 'guys in skirts etc' thing is also one of my pet hates - they're wrestlers ffs, right?!! Punk is an asshole and John is every bit a man to me - they're never going to light a candle, exchange sweet nothings and then hold hands skipping down the street. I think it makes fic that much more enjoyable to read when the characters are true(ish) to life or at least familiar.
Anyway, enough of me rattling on about this! Thank you so, so much for that comment, I really am blown away by it. I'm not sure if/when there will be a sequel to this as I'm just getting back into writing after a bit of a hiatus but if inspiration strikes I'm not going to fight it off. Also, I'm not one for self promotion I promise but I've got another John/Punk fic on my journal called One Round - that's less intense than this one but you'll find no 'straight edge superstar' lines in that either if you fancy a read :)
(Oh and I didn't want to be presumptuous but if you want to add me as a friend feel free :D )
I'm really glad I could make you feel that little bit prouder of your work, it's really fantastic ! And it's so good to find someone who's so totally on the same page as me hahha. I've been reading for years (this journal is so old its password is my very first slash pairing) and at first I think it's easier to be more forgiving, but once you've cut your teeth a bit and read a bit and begun noticing all the little weaknesses in writing that can derail a story's enjoyability, it sort of becomes this slashy holy grail to actually sink your teeth into something that's written well. Plus, when you frequent ff.net more than anywhere else you do kinda find yourself swimming in a proliferation of shite, and nice as it is to help young writers with concrit, it's so refreshing to find writing you can relax into and not be unconsciously betaing the whole way through ! I'm all for PWP but even porn needs some spelling and grammar ahah. It's also nice to come across someone who agrees about the whole 'manliness' thing ! If we wanted to read about girls being into each other we'd have looked for some femmeslash, right ? And even then we'd probably find characters with more cojones !
I definitely will be friending you, but like I said, my journal is pretty much defunct. I've kinda been drifting away from regular fandoming for a while now, and I find myself dipping in and out of forums and LJ just when I've got a particular craving or I'm looking for something specific, so I doubt there's ever be more recent posts in my journal than 2008 (oh God, four years ._.) but you have prompted me to dust off my passwords and delete all my spam and get a new userpic (which you may recognise) ;) so who knows ! Also, can I be cheeky and ask for any recommendations of LJ groups pushing good writing for wwe authors that you may know of ? When you're this out of the loop it can be difficult to root out the hidden treasures from a fandom, I'm sure at least some part of it must be a case of looking for needles in the wrong part of the haystack !
Anyway, apart from all the blather it's lovely to meet you, and I will definitely be keeping up to speed with your posts in the future ! :) And I'm off to my second tab to read One Round now ;)
I know exactly what you mean about the crap over at ff.net. I cross post there but unless it's smutty stuff or the 'pairing du jour' it never goes down well!! I struggle to find decent stuff to read myself because I'm not into a lot of the popular pairings, then there's the writing to tackle on top of that *eyeroll* (Oh, and your comment on the femmeslash made me smile btw cos you're absolutely right - give me Nattie/Beth over Eve/K2 any day!)
In terms of LJ there's not a lot of choice really. The good and the bad tend to get posted in together and I gather this is one of the only fandoms where beta-ing is the exception rather than the rule. The busiest comms are probably wrestling_slashviolentpretties and slash-inthering but at least there are some diamonds in the rough there.
Thanks for the friend request :) I post all kinds of random crap so I apologise in advance for that ;) Hope you have a great weekend <3
