By WWE TV day standards the arena was reasonably quiet, much like the calm before a storm. People were milling around at the top of the ramp and a few sound guys scurried about miking up the right areas of the crowd and checking the feed from the announce desk.
In the centre of the ring stood Randy, dressed in loose fitting black sweat shorts and a clingier t-shirt. The light blue of the cotton showed off the depth of his tan and he reminded himself to thank the sponsors next time he had a meeting with them. The t-shirt had turned a lot of heads and as he was newly back on the market he was more than happy to be stared at and admired.
Things with Cody had deteriorated while they were on separate brands but it was the draft that sealed their fate. With Ted back on the scene and Cody a year wiser, older and sexier it appeared that absence really did make the heart grow fonder. He was however grateful that Cody had been decent enough to break it off before getting back into things with Ted. Somehow they had both managed to save face and part ways with the minimum of gossip springing up about them.
All the extra time on his hands had seen Randy being in the gym and the ring more regularly. Without the demands on his time that a relationship made he was finding life that bit more fun, even when it came to the long taping days. That day with him in the ring was one scantily clad South African in the shape of Justin Gabriel. Randy couldn't believe his luck when his feud with the younger man was written into the show, knowing that he could use an agile opponent to work with rather than the likes of Kane, Show or Mark Henry. Unfortunately in readiness for their first match together they had been practising in the ring for over an hour and Justin was still struggling to spring into the scoop slam properly. It annoyed Randy but was much more to the frustration of Johnny Ace at ringside and the physios who would be expected to repair any damage to Randy's shoulder and neck if it kept going wrong.
“Man, I'm sorry. I just can't get the timing right. So, I take one step off the ropes and....”
“Justin, it's so easy. It's a front bump, just a little faster than usual. Run it again.”
Randy was doing his best to control his temper but Justin was taking him to the edges of it. Eight attempts at perfecting it and still Justin was over rotating his bump, landing wrong or not jumping at the right time. Once more Randy whipped the younger man into the ropes and went to slam him. Once more Justin bounced back at the wrong speed and this time barged straight through Randy, sending him to the mat.
“Jesus Randy, I'm so sorry. Are you... are you okay?”
The only reason Randy stopped himself from going crazy was the presence of Johnny Ace, the guy who had disciplined him only weeks before when he ran his mouth in a PR interview and upset half the roster. Not even his level of star power could save him from the verbal equivalent of a slapped ass if he carried on alienating his colleagues one by one. Instead he chose a different tactic.
“Mathews. Get up here.”
The rumbling voice echoed in the empty arena as Randy sat up, his eyes fixating straight onto the announce desk where Josh sat in sweats and a t-shirt.
At first Josh didn't quite register what was being said, his time on the announce team making him oblivious to the words coming from the ring during matches. He looked around to see a disgruntled looking Randy cross legged on the mat but did nothing about it, going back to leafing through the script for the night.
“Hey, Mathews. I said get in here. Don't tell me you're as bad at hearing as this kid is at wrestling.”
This time the words found their target and Josh looked up and saw Randy smirking at him.
“Me?”
The look of naivete and fear on Josh's face disgusted Justin but amused Randy. Justin was convinced that he could convert his feud with Randy into something more intimate and that it might lead to the kind of career move that Cody had turned into something great. He didn't want anyone interfering with that, least of all Josh who appeared to be the darling of the entire crew. He knew that Josh was choosy, single but not looking which automatically made him the hottest piece of ass around.
“Yeah, you. Get in here and show this kid how it's done. You... you do remember how to take a bump don't you?”
The level of sarcasm in Randy's voice was deliberate. Over the years he often practised with Josh when there was nobody else around but that hadn't happened for a while. He knew however that Josh kept his skills and fitness in check just in case one day he'd be called up to the main roster full time and have a chance of doing what he really got into wrestling to do.
“I bump better than you do old timer. Gimme a sec.”
Taking off his mic pack and dumping it on the desk, Josh was in the ring inside twenty seconds, stretching his legs and arms out as he had been taught years ago. He flexed his neck and rolled it around, arms high above his head, unable to see Randy's eyes drifting south to peek at the exposed band of flesh where the plain white t-shirt had ridden up. It was only at the last second when he looked straight forward that he caught Randy looking and then smiled at him, sure to make it clear that he'd been rumbled.
“So, what am I in here for? You want me to bump or something?”
“Yeah. Angel here can't time the powerslam right. You gonna show him how it's done?”
Josh nodded and when he got a return nod from Randy he ran the ropes without prompting, leaping into the slam at just the right time and tucking his head up, just as his trainer had taught him when he was 19. The one thing he wasn't ready for was the impact of the mat against his spine and it took his breath momentarily. With an almost inaudible groan he took a deep breath, unaware of the way his vulnerable position and low moan had connected with Randy's body.
“You still got it kid. Better than this guy here. Gabriel, go get some water and run the move through in your head on the way there and back for God's sake.”
Johnny Ace's gruff voice at ringside broke the moment of tension that saw Randy still laid over Josh who was breathing steadily underneath him. Ace walked off after Gabriel, sure to be ready to offer some words of advice as they made the long trip back to catering.
“Can I get up now?”
Josh's voice carried a hint of a smile in it, his sense of humour returning with every breath that didn't burn as it went into his lungs. He didn't really want to lose the weight or spicy scent of the man laid across him but in the middle of the ring wasn't the time or place to experience it the best.
“Sure. If you want to.” Randy slithered away and sat back on his heels, the shorts tightening in a very obvious way across his hips. ”Say Josh, seeing as I asked you for a favour can I offer you one in return? Only I get to pick what it is if it's all the same to you.”
Nodding, Josh agreed without question, eager to help but also to please the man he had admired from afar for the longest time. Since Cody came on the scene he had shelved all romantic intentions he had towards Randy, knowing it was for the best and that he was doing nothing more than living in a fantasy.
“Seeing as you've been a big help, both in showing Gabriel how it's done and getting him out of my hair for a while, how's about we grab a beer later on. It's been a while since I,” Randy paused for a moment, let his most winning smile cross his face and then continued. “Well, since I talked to anyone if you see what I mean.”
“Um, yeah. Okay. That'd be great.”
The blush flooded Josh's cheeks as the meaning of Randy's words got through to him. Being hunted down by someone like that was certainly flattering but most of all it was exciting. Normally the approaches were made by random fans and one or two of the ring crew that travelled with them. The wrestlers seemed off limits, even to someone as close to the action as he was.
Rolling over and sliding under the ring ropes, Randy turned to face Josh, who was finally climbing to his feet, as he started to back up the ramp. “I'll see you after the show. Mine is the black rental jeep out in the yard.”
A spark passed between them and that was enough to bring Josh back to his senses. He slipped through the ropes and went back to the announce desk, picking up the script and burying his nose in it to hide his pink face. Looking up to the top of the ramp he saw the slender figure disappear behind the 'Tron and allowed himself to smile. He was already looking forward to later no matter where their conversation led.
A/N: Pimping Josh out is so much fun :D All reads and reviews appreciated as always :)
