I have done it...a month too late, but oh well, nobody else has submitted.

Title: When the Desert Winds Turn
Pairing: Severus/Harry Post-Hogwarts
Word Count: 318
Rating: PG-13
Scenario: Harry spends many days staring at Severus Snape's portrait in the Headmaster's office.

Pain/pleasure...pleasure/pain. Inseparable. Indescribable. Ineluctable.

Hogwarts was undergoing major rebuilding. It would take most of the next year. Those students who had fought in the Final Battle against Voldemort, all of whom had been more or less unable to complete their final years at Hogwarts, had been given their diplomas--as Professor McGonagall said, they had more than earned them.

Some were helping with the rebuilding. Some, like the young man slipping into the former Headmaster's office, wanted to see Hogwarts the way it had always been.

And Harry Potter did, he truly did. It was break time at the moment though, so Harry spent his break as he always did--in the office where he had learned all of the truths that had helped him win.

Most of the portraits were empty, having slipped through the castle to visit with old friends while reconstruction was underway. There were only two exceptions. One, which contained a very old man, slept rather noisily. The other was the one Harry had come to see.

He spent much of his free time staring at this painting, and could never figure out why. He had despised the man in it...although at the end, he hadn't hated him quite so much. Was it just because the man had died to save him? Or...was it something else?

Harry raised his handsome emerald eyes--his mother's eyes--to look at the portrait again. Severus Snape's black eyes stared back at him for a long moment. Harry felt a curious thrill run through his body. "Professor..." he murmured.

"Harry," the portrait murmured back. Harry felt the curious thrill again. "I never told you the truth..."

"About my mother?"

"About you." Severus looked up to make sure none of the other portraits were watching, then stretched out his hand towards Harry. Harry stretched his hand back, and somehow, the two made contact, Severus's hand gripping Harry's.

And suddenly, Harry understood.
