I never feared Phineas; I never had the occasion to do so. I was jealous of him; very briefly I hated him; yet though I knew him as well as I did I never feared him.
Many learn to fear those they are close to: those who are loved know our intimacies, and we theirs. Phineas knew mine and I did not fear his knowing.
He loved me, I am sure of it.
I was afraid of his loving me, but I did not fear Phineas. I wish he had feared loving me and I wish he had feared me.
