"If David Carr was the quarterback for the Detroit Lions, we wouldn't be having this discussion because they would be winning, because he is mentally tough and Joey Harrington isn't."
- Sean Salsbury (that is totally spelled wrong and I have no desire to look up the correct spelling right now) on NFL Live
This quote came when discussing whether Harrington or Carr were ever going to develop as QBs for their respective teams. Now, I'm not saying I agree, but the fact it can even be discussed should be more than enough reason to give up on the Harrington experiment.
I realize the line can't block, I realize Mooch may be a boring play caller, and I realize Matt Millen is a total douche. But you can't keep Harrington around forever on the basis that he could potentially someday be a good quarterback, it's a ridiculous way to operate a football team. This is Harrington's 4th year, and unfortunately he's been stricken with an injury plagued WR corp and a offensive line that would have trouble keeping the Northwest High School JV team out of the backfield. Also unfortunate for him, he has run out of excuses. Injuries, no injuries, running game, no running game, line or no line, etc, Harrington supporters have used every single excuse in the book for his tenure in the NFL and it's time for a change because he simply has not and (in my mind) will not produce any time in the future for the Lions franchise.
More NFL thoughts...
The Saints got abso-fucking-lutely hosed by the officials against the Falcons, as that is a penalty that should never be called, let alone on a game winning field goal attempt. The NFL handed the Falcons another chance at winning that game and if you think the fact Michael Vick plays for the Falcons didn't have something to do with that penalty, then you are way too naive to the workings of professional sports. You may think the NFL would want New Orleans to succeed, but sticking them in San Antonio for home games (plus the farce that was the Week 2 "home" game in New York) shows the league had other thoughts for the Saints this year. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they should have been given any competitive advantages or such, but it seems the league is going out of the way to screw them.
I don't want to hear about Charlie Weis being the driving force behind the New England dynasty, just because the Pats are struggling this year while Weis gets sainted in South Bend. The rash on injuries that have absolutely destroyed the NE defense has far more to do with the struggles than the over-thinking and tinkering playcalling of Weis. Let's not forget Romeo Crennel also left the team this year, it wasn't just Weis. Further, let's all get of our knees when it comes to Weis. They beat Pitt (terrible, although Wanny has the best porn stache in football coaching), Michigan (terrible or slightly above average, depending on the barometric pressure, wind speed, and the position of the moon in regards to Jupiter), Washington (seriously terrible), and Purdue (the 117th ranked defense in the country, also terrible). They lost to Michigan State (good talent but extremely undisciplined, coached by a Kentuckian version of Rain Man without the super intelligence, and allergic to defense), and USC (hands down the best team in the country). It's a good season so far, but let's not annoint the Irish National Title Contenders because they beat a few bad teams, lost to an average one, and played out of their minds to stay with USC in a great game. You can't convince me that if USC and ND played 10 times this season that USC wouldn't win at least 9 times. 16th is the perfect spot in the BCS standings for them right now. It's only mid-October. The Irish play Tennessee, BYU, Navy, Syracuse, and Stanford to close out the season. If they win them all, they are almost guaranteed to make a BCS bowl regardless of where they sit right now. ND only needs to be in the top 12 and have 9 wins to be considered for a spot and if they meet that someone will certainly snap them up. If they lose to any of these teams, they didn't deserve a BCS spot in the first place.
So in conclusion, Charlie Weis is a good coach but he isn't Knute Rockne. Little bit of a tangent there.
Back to the NFL...
While the Colts look impressive at this point, I just can't picture them actually winning a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning and Tony "Help me! There is a chicken bone in my throat!" Dungy at the helm.
Ladanian Tomlinson is hands down the best running back in the NFL right now.
Shaun Alexander baffles me. When you watch him, he doesn't strike me as a great running back. He seems to have average speed, be a little soft, and never looks like he is dominating. Yet he consistently gains 150 yards and scores, and then every year at least once he goes off for a video game like stat line of 200 yards and 5 TDs.
I find it odd that the Lions defense has been talking smack about the offense. Sure, Joey and the boys should have put up a few more points to seal that win, and sure, the defense played great...until the end. It wasn't Harrington out there letting Chris fuckin' Weinke (hasn't played in a game since 2002) and Ricky Proehl (hasn't scored a TD since 2003) march down the field for the game winning score. Bly and company need to finish their own jobs before going after the offense.
And I'm done for now.
